Not only does the Nokia N85 have very capable, fine sounding music player software onboard, it also features an FM transmitter, so you can broadcast the tunes on your N85 wirelessly to nearby FM radios, including in-car stereos, home radios and hi-fi systems - and even other mobiles that have FM radios built in.
The FM transmitter is an easy function to set-up and use. You can switch it on from your music player application when a track or playlist is selected. It works over a range of up to 3 metres.
All you have to do to hear it being played on the radio is to tune the radio to a free frequency where there are no other transmissions. You can then select that frequency in the phone's FM transmitter option, and you will be able to hear your tunes through the radio.
The N85's FM transmitter can tune into the frequency range 88.1 to 107.9 MHz, and to save power in case it's left on when not in use, it has an automatic switch-off after several minutes of not transmitting.
Here's how to use the FM transmitter when using the Music Player...
Using the FM transmitter with the Music Player
- Press the Menu button (Figure 1).
- Scroll to highlight Music (Figure 2). Press Open.
- Scroll to highlight Music player (Figure 3). Press Open.
- From the Music menu, scroll down to highlight a category from which to select a track (Figure 4). Press Open.
- Select from further menu options until you get to the track or playlist you want to play (Figure 5). Press Play.
- The track opens and starts playing (Figure 6). Press Options.
- Scroll down to highlight FM transmitter (Figure 7). Press Select.
- The FM transmitter screen appears (Figure 8). Press Change.
- You are asked: Activate FM transmitter (Figure 9)? Press Yes.
- A message appears telling you that the FM transmitter is transmitting at the displayed frequency, and that you need to tune your radio to the same frequency (Figure 10).
- Tune your FM radio (in your car, home, or mobile) to a free frequency. Make a note of it (in this example we're using 91.2 MHz).
- To change the phone's FM transmitter frequency to the same as your radio's free frequency, scroll down to highlight the Frequency option (Figure 11). Press Change.
- In the Enter new frequency panel that appears (Figure 12), type in the free frequency to which your radio is tuned (Figure 13). Press OK.
- A message appears confirming the new frequency at which the phone is transmitting (Figure 14).
- Press Exit to get back to the Music Player screen. Continue to use the music player functions as before.
If you move areas or change radios to which you're transmitting tracks, you may need to change the FM transmitter to a new free freqency or fine-tune the frequency. Simply follow the procedure outlined above, changing the frequency in the Enter new frequency panel to match the altered frequency on your radio.
Switching the FM transmitter off
The FM transmitter will be automatically switched off after a period of inactivity where it's not transmitting music. If, however, you want to switch it off, it's a similar procedure to switching it on:
- In the Music Player press Options (Figure 6).
- Scroll down to highlight FM transmitter (Figure 7). Press Select.
- Press Change. The FM transmitter is switched off (Figure 15).
