Why We Chose These Phones
Foldable phones are the most expensive type you can buy. For this reason, you need to make sure you’re making the right choice as $1000+ for a phone is a big investment.
The most important thing, when you’re spending well over four figures on a phone, is the level of support it gets. Both Google and Samsung excel in this department, although Google’s updates come out a lot faster – usually as soon as they’re released.
OnePlus’ support is decent enough; it’ll deliver five major Android updates. Motorola’s is terrible. But the phone is significantly cheaper than the rest of the phones on this list – that’s a trade-off but it isn’t one we’d recommend.
Xiaomi has new foldable phones coming too, and once we’ve tested them they’ll likely be featured here. But again that is predicated on Xiaomi upping its support game – currently it isn’t very good (and HyperOS has its fair share of issues too).
My advice? For the most reliable, consistent performance you’ll want to go with either the OnePlus Open, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 / Z Flip 6, or Google’s Pixel Fold (although this phone is difficult to find outside the USA).
Me? I’d be inclined to go with the Pixel Fold if I were in the USA, and for everywhere else, Samsung’s Galaxy Fold / Flip models. They’re the longest standing models and come with the least amount of potential design issues.
