Bluetooth is a short-range, wireless networking standard used by mobile phones and other peripherals.

You can use Bluetooth to connect your mobile phone wirelessly to a Bluetooth headset or to transfer data back and forth with a Bluetooth-equipped computer.

Bluetooth transfer speeds depend on the version of Bluetooth being used:

  • Bluetooth 1.2: 1.2 Mbit/s
  • Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (Extended Data Rate): 3 Mbit/s

The exact functionality of a Bluetooth device is dictated by the Bluetooth Profile embedded into it. For instance, the Apple iPhone doesn't include the profile needed for data transfer to and from the phone - so its Bluetooth functionality is limited to connecting to headsets.
