How to set up email on the HTC Desire

We show you how to set up Gmail, POP3/IMAP and Exchange email on the HTC Desire

When you first switch on your Desire, you're taken to the setup manager. Here, you can set up your email before you even get a chance to have a look around the device.

Gmail account setup
To set up your Gmail account here, tap the Google Account option.

Here, you can choose whether you already have a Google account or want to set one up. If you don't have one you can create an account straight from the device.

If you already have a Gmail account, you simply have to sign in and you're set up.

To set up a Gmail account without using the set up manager, head to the apps menu by tapping the up arrow at the bottom of the screen.

  1. Select Gmail and next when prompted.
  2. Choose to set up a new Gmail account if you don't have one and follow the onscreen instructions
  3. If you already have a Gmail account, select the option to sign in.
  4. once you've signed in, your Gmail account wil be ready to use and you'll start receiving emails instantly

Microsoft Exchange setup
You can set up your Exchange email using the setup manager when you first turn your Desire on.

To do this, choose the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync option.

Enter your email address and password, or choose to set email up manually.

If you run your email using a known domain, the Desire should detect your email settings, such as domain and server addresses automatically. If not, you'll have to enter the details manually, along with your username and password. Also, tick the SSL Connection box if your server requires it to operate.

You'll then be taken to a summary screen where you can change the mail box name and change the name so it'll display your name when you send or receive emails.

To set up an Exchange email account without using the set up manager, follow these instructions:

  1. Press the menu button under the screen.
  2. Choose Accounts & sync.
  3. Select add account and then Exchange ActiveSync.
  4. Enter your email address and password.
  5. if you're using a well-known domain, the Desire should detect your email settings, such as domain and server addresses automatically.
  6. If not, you'll be prompted to enter the details manually.
  7. You'll then be taken to a summary screen where you can change the mail box name and change the name so it'll display your name when you send or receive emails.

Other email setup
To set up any other email, such as Hotmail or Yahoo, select Other mail if you're setting it up through the set up manager.

Enter your email address and password and if correct, a settings screen will appear, detailing the account name and your name. Tap next and the email account will be set up.

  1. Tap on the Mail shortcut on the first homescreen
  2. Choose Other (POP3/IMAP)
  3. Enter your email address and password
  4. You'll then be taken to a summary page that shows the protocol you're using to connect, email address, username, password, server, security type and server port. Tap next and the account information will be verified.
  5. You'll then be taken to a summary screen where you can change the mail box name and change the name so it'll display your name when you send or receive emails.
