Google Play will not be coming to BlackBerry 10 handsets, according to an official statement

BlackBerry has stepped in to nip in the bud rumours which have emerged suggesting BlackBerry 10 could be gearing up to run the Google Play Android app store.

Over the weekend, images appeared on the CrackBerry forums showing what appeared to be a BlackBerry Z30 running Google Play. This was an interesting development, because BlackBerry 10 has been able to run side-loaded Android apps for a while, with the recent 10.2 update bumping compatibility up to include Android 4.2 apps and below.

CrackBerry got in touch with BlackBerry over the images and the company has now issued a statement on the issue, saying it has no plans to support Google’s app store platform.

“There is no planned support for Google Play on BlackBerry,” the company said,”BlackBerry World remains the primary source for trusted and curated BlackBerry applications and we continue to support open standards and open source tools so BlackBerry developers can continue to create great apps on any of the development platforms we support.”

A resounding no, if ever we heard one. As frustrating as it is, it’s a decision that likely comes from both sides of the fence. It’s unlikely BlackBerry would want to subvert its BlackBerry World app store (which raises the question, why support Android apps at all then?) and Google probably won’t want to authorise Google Play on a rival platform (though it should, it’d generate more revenue).
