Samsung has unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 at Unpacked 2024, bringing a host of updates to its enduring foldable smartphone. While lower prices are not expected, there are plenty of notable changes and improvements.

Release Date and Price

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Literally Everything You Need To KnowPin

Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Z Fold 6 at the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event on July 10, 2024. The phone is set to be available starting July 24, 2024.

This earlier release date indicates that Samsung is either confident about its new launch or feels pressure from Google and Apple, especially with the Pixel 9 series launching on August 13, 2024.

As for pricing, hopes for a significant drop may be optimistic. Prices start from £ 1,762.20 / € 1,999.00 / $ 1,899.99 which is effectively the same as before meaning for the vast majority of people, this phone remains simply too expensive.

Design and Display

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Literally Everything You Need To KnowPin

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 features a significant redesign, with a wider and thinner profile compared to its predecessor. It measures just 5.6mm thick when unfolded and 12.1mm when folded, a notable reduction from the Z Fold 5.

“This is the next frontier of Galaxy AI, supercharging this unique form factor with enhancements across features such as Circle to Search with Google – optimised for the ultimate user experience. Another great example of this is Galaxy AI’s Interpreter feature, which uses the dual screen of our foldables to show translation for a real-time conversation. Underpinning all of this is also our commitment to bring the best to our customers, so we’re pleased to also provide seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates.”

The outer display has grown from 6.2 inches to 6.3 inches, offering a wider aspect ratio for improved usability. The main inner display remains at 7.6 inches but now includes Samsung’s new “Ironflex” technology, potentially enhancing durability.

Color options include navy blue, light pink, and silver, with white and black variants possibly exclusive to Samsung’s website.

From the latest flagships to mid-range and foldables. Here’s all the best Samsung phone deals right now.

Performance and Specs

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, ensuring top-tier performance. It comes with 12GB of RAM and storage options ranging from 256GB to 1TB.

Samsung’s issues with the Exynos 2500 chipset led to speculation about a partnership with MediaTek. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 expected to debut in October 2024. The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, reportedly 30% more expensive, will bring additional AI features.

Cameras

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Literally Everything You Need To KnowPin

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has the following camera setup:

  • 50MP main camera
  • 12MP ultra-wide camera
  • 10MP telephoto camera
  • 10MP outer selfie camera
  • 4MP under-display inner camera

Samsung has redesigned the camera housing to give the Galaxy Z Fold 6 a more professional and elegant look. However, this is where I believe Samsung could have done more.

The camera system still includes last year’s 50MP main wide camera and 10MP 3x optical zoom camera. The only upgrade is the 12MP ultrawide camera, which now features a better sensor for low-light performance and improved focusing speed, adopted from the S24. Any other photographic improvements are thanks to updates in Samsung’s ProVision software.

In my limited hands-on experience, the cameras performed similarly to the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The 3x zoom is useful, and it can extend up to a 30x space zoom, although I find the reliance on AI image enhancement a bit excessive.

I had hoped for the adoption of the flagship S24 Ultra cameras. With a smartphone costing nearly $2,000, it’s reasonable to expect the 200MP main camera and enhanced 5x optical zoom from the S24 Ultra. While the current camera array will satisfy most casual photographers, it falls short of flagship expectations.

The cover screen includes a 10MP selfie camera, which I found quite good, and there’s also a 4MP under-display camera on the main screen, primarily for video calls.

Bottom line? While the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s cameras are competent, they do not represent a significant upgrade from the previous model. For a device in this price range, more substantial improvements, particularly adopting features from the S24 Ultra, would have been more fitting.

Galaxy AI Features

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 offers a range of AI-powered features and tools that maximize its large screen and significantly enhance productivity. However, there are areas where it could further improve.

AI-Powered Features

  • Note Assist on Samsung Notes: Provides translation, summaries, and auto-formatting for meeting notes. It includes a new transcription feature that transcribes, translates, and summarizes voice recordings directly in Notes. The PDF overlay translation feature translates text in PDF files and overlays them perfectly, supporting text in images and graphs. Despite these features, it would benefit from even more seamless integration with other productivity apps for a more unified experience.
  • Samsung Keyboard’s Composer: Generates suggested text for emails and social media apps based on simple keywords and analyzes previous posts to reflect your tone. While useful, it could be enhanced with support for more languages and customization options to better suit diverse user needs.
  • S Pen Integration: Expanded with Galaxy AI on the Z Fold 6’s screen. The new Sketch to Image feature generates image options when you sketch or draw on photos in the Gallery or Note Screen. This feature could be improved by offering more advanced drawing tools and better accuracy in image generation.

Enhanced Productivity with Google Integration

  • Google Gemini: Fully integrated, offering an AI-powered assistant accessible by swiping the screen corner or using voice commands. It provides real-time help with writing, learning, planning, and integrates with Google apps for organizing travel itineraries and exploring landmarks.
  • Barrier-Free Communication:
    • Interpreter: Utilizes the dual screen form factor for conversation mode, allowing both parties to view translations on the main and cover screens. It also offers one-way translation for lectures and presentations.
    • Live Translate: Translates phone calls in real-time, now extended to third-party apps. Expanding this feature to support more apps and offering better contextual understanding could enhance user experience.

ProVisual Engine for Creativity

  • Photo Assist: Enhances the editing experience on the large screen, helping to create professional-grade content. Portrait Studio offers different portrait styles like 3D cartoon or watercolor. Instant Slow-mo generates additional frames for smooth slow-motion videos.

Upgraded Gaming Experience

  • Enhanced Gaming: Powered by a strong chipset and a 1.6x larger vapor chamber, the Z Fold 6 provides a longer and more immersive gaming experience with Ray Tracing and a 7.6-inch screen offering up to 2,600 nits brightness.

Battery and Charging

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 uses the same 4400mAh battery which is surprising given its slimmer profile. Plus, with the power savings you’ll get with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 GEN 3 chipset, this should combine into better battery life than what you got on the Galaxy Z Fold 5, albeit only by a fraction.

Wireless and wired charging speeds are the same as they were on the Galaxy Z Fold 5:

  • 25W Wired Charging: The Z Fold 6 supports 25W wired charging, which Samsung advertises can charge the battery up to 50% in just 30 minutes. This rapid charging capability ensures that you can quickly get back to using your device without long waits, making it convenient for users with busy schedules.
  • 15W Wireless Charging: For those who prefer the convenience of wireless charging, the Z Fold 6 supports 15W wireless charging. While not as fast as the wired option, it offers a hassle-free way to keep your phone powered up without dealing with cables, ideal for use at work or home where you can place the device on a charging pad.
  • 4.5W Reverse Wireless Charging: The Z Fold 6 also includes 4.5W reverse wireless charging. This feature allows you to use your phone to wirelessly charge other compatible devices, such as earbuds or smartwatches. It’s a handy feature for on-the-go power sharing, ensuring your other gadgets stay charged without needing separate chargers.

Additional Features

  • The S Pen is supported, though a built-in slot remains MIA.
  • Improved water and dust resistance

There Was No Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra Model Announced

Leaks suggest a potential Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra model. Normally, an Ultra version would be a welcome addition, but given the high price of the base models, further price increases seem excessive.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra is rumored to feature premium materials like titanium and potentially more advanced camera capabilities. However, details remain scarce, and this model may not materialize.
