- The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US.
- The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 and has a far more capable camera system.
- You’re paying $700 extra for the Duo’s folding screen, not a better camera.
The Duo’s camera isn’t bad on its own. It has a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultrawide, and it can record 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 120fps on the main camera.
But compare it with the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the Duo’s camera setup looks thin for a phone that costs so much more.
The Duo has no dedicated telephoto camera. Its 2x mode is an optical-quality crop from the main camera. The Pro Max has a separate 48MP telephoto camera, offering 4x optical zoom and 8x optical-quality zoom. It also has a variable-aperture main camera, which the Duo doesn’t.
| iPhone Duo | iPhone 18 Pro Max | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting US price | $1,999 | $1,299 |
| Main camera | 48MP | 48MP with variable aperture |
| Ultrawide camera | 48MP | 48MP |
| Dedicated telephoto camera | No | Yes, 48MP |
| Zoom | Optical-quality 2x crop | 4x optical, 8x optical-quality |
| Main appeal | Folding screen and large viewfinder | More complete camera system |
The missing telephoto camera is a big compromise
The Duo’s main and ultrawide cameras cover everyday photos well: people, food, landscapes, rooms and group shots.
What it can’t do is match the Pro Max when you want to get closer to a distant subject. Think concerts, sports, wildlife or a child playing across a pitch. You can crop into the Duo’s main camera, but that isn’t the same as having a separate lens designed for zoom photography.
The Pro Max gives you a dedicated 4x telephoto camera and an 8x optical-quality option. That means more flexibility when you can’t move closer, and less reliance on digital zoom.
The Pro Max has a better main camera, too

The iPhone 18 Pro Max’s main camera has a variable aperture. It can physically adjust how much light reaches the sensor, giving it more control in different lighting and over depth of field.
The Duo doesn’t have that hardware. Its folding screen could make it easier to frame and review photos, but a larger viewfinder doesn’t make the cameras themselves more capable.
That’s the trade-off: the Duo may be more enjoyable to shoot with, while the Pro Max gives you more camera options.
You don’t have to pay $1,000+ for a new phone. Buying refurbished saves you, on average, 40% to 50%.
Which means you skip the inflationary price hikes, side-step the 2026 memory cost crisis, and still get the flagship performance and specs you want.
Recommended Options For 2026You’re paying for the fold, not the camera
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB in the US. The 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. That’s a $700 difference at the same storage level.
That extra money buys the Duo’s 7.6-inch inner display, compact folded design and new ways to use iOS. If you specifically want a foldable iPhone, those features may be worth paying for.
But don’t assume Apple’s most expensive iPhone has its best camera. Here, the Duo gets the folding display, while the cheaper Pro Max gets the more complete camera hardware.
Which one should you buy?
Get the iPhone 18 Pro Max if camera flexibility matters to you, especially if you use zoom or take photos of distant subjects. It costs less and gives you more camera hardware.
Get the iPhone Duo if the folding screen is the reason you want it, and you’re comfortable with a more limited camera setup. Its cameras should be capable for everyday use, but they don’t justify the extra $700 on camera grounds.

The Duo may be the more interesting iPhone. The 18 Pro Max is the better camera phone, and it costs a lot less.
