The iPhone 17 Pro Max appearing on the refurbished market this early is unusual, but it’s there, and if you can find one at a meaningful discount versus new, it’s the safest long-term buy you can make.
The A19 Pro chip, the refined titanium chassis, and Apple’s most capable imaging system make this the no-compromise option for anyone who wants to buy once and be done with it for the foreseeable future.

iPhone 16 Pro Max
The more realistic ultra-premium pick. The iPhone 16 Pro Max runs Apple Intelligence natively, ships with the A18 Pro chipset, and has a 48MP periscope telephoto system that genuinely competes with dedicated cameras for video and photography.
The 6.9-inch ProMotion display and 120Hz LTPO panel round out a specification sheet that will feel current for years.

The premium tier is where refurbished iPhones make the most compelling case for themselves. You’re getting hardware that was top-of-the-line 12-18 months ago at prices that are often 40% below new.
iPhone 16 Pro
The iPhone 16 Pro shares the same A18 Pro chip and Apple Intelligence platform as the Pro Max, with the only meaningful concessions being the smaller 6.3-inch display and slightly smaller battery.
If you don’t need the biggest screen, this is arguably the smarter refurbished buy. The price gap between the Pro and Pro Max on the second-hand market is real, and the core experience is nearly identical.
The Natural Titanium 256GB and Black Titanium variants are the ones to watch.
iPhone 15 Pro Max
Still one of the best-value premium picks on the refurbished market.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max was the first iPhone to shoot 4K60 ProRes video to an external drive, introduced the titanium frame, and runs the A17 Pro chip which still handles everything iOS throws at it without breaking a sweat. Apple Intelligence support is also in place, future-proofing things further.
If you’re on a tighter budget within this tier, the 256GB Black Titanium is the entry point.
If storage is a priority — especially for creators shooting ProRes — the 512GB Blue Titanium and 1TB Natural Titanium options are genuinely worth the premium on the second-hand market.

iPhone 16
The standard iPhone 16 is a stronger midrange candidate than it looks.
It runs the A18 chip — not the Pro variant, but still Apple Intelligence-compatible — and introduced the Camera Control button, a vertical camera module for spatial video, and Action Mode for video stabilisation. It’s meaningfully better than the iPhone 15 it replaced.
The 128GB Teal and Ultramarine colourways are among the better-value unlocked variants. If you want breathing room, step up to the 256GB Black.
iPhone 15 Pro
Often overlooked in favour of the Pro Max, the iPhone 15 Pro runs the same A17 Pro chip in a lighter, more pocketable chassis.
It supports Apple Intelligence and still has the titanium build that made the 15 series feel like a generational step. The trade-off is a smaller battery and no periscope zoom — but at the price point it commands refurbished, neither is a dealbreaker.

iPhone 14 Pro Max
The iPhone 14 Pro Max introduced the Dynamic Island and the always-on display — features that still feel premium in 2026.
It runs the A16 Bionic, which is no slouch, and Apple has confirmed iOS 18 support. The question is longevity: you’re looking at roughly two to three more years of full software support, which means this is a 2–3 year phone, not a 4–5 year one. Buy it with eyes open on that timeline.

Who should buy this tier: Most people. Solid daily drivers with genuine longevity and significant savings versus new.
Budget: Still Capable, With Caveats
Budget refurbished iPhones are not bad phones. But they come with a shortened runway, and you need to go in with realistic expectations. These are 2–3 year purchases at best.
iPhone 15 / 15 Plus
The iPhone 15 is the best budget-tier pick on this list. It brought Dynamic Island to the standard lineup, USB-C charging, and a 48MP main camera, a meaningful hardware upgrade over the iPhone 14.
Apple Intelligence support is not confirmed for the A16-powered standard iPhone 15, which is worth noting, but for day-to-day use it’s a capable phone at an increasingly attractive price.

The iPhone 15 Plus is the same phone with a larger 6.7-inch display and better battery life — a strong option for anyone who wants big-screen real estate without the Pro price tag.

iPhone 14 / 14 Plus
Solid performers, but the A15 Bionic inside is now a couple of generations behind. The iPhone 14 is a reasonable budget pick if the price is right; the iPhone 14 Plus offers excellent battery life in a big chassis.
No Dynamic Island, no Apple Intelligence. Fine for light users with modest expectations.
Available in Blue, Red, Yellow, and Starlight.
iPhone 13 Series
The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro are the floor of what we’d recommend in 2026. They run iOS 18 today, but they’re approaching end-of-life territory. Likely one, maybe two major iOS updates left.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max with its larger battery is the pick of the litter here if you go this route.
Buy a 13-series phone if the price is very sharp and you’re comfortable with a 2-year horizon. Don’t buy one expecting a long-term device.
The iPhone 16e also deserves a mention here; it’s Apple’s entry-level 2025 iPhone, built on the A16 chip with Apple Intelligence support. You’ll also get extended support with it because it is much newer too.
What To Avoid in 2026
- iPhone 12 and older. These models are out of Apple’s active update window — iOS 16 was the last major release for the iPhone 12, and it no longer receives security patches. That’s not a deal-breaker for a secondary device or a hand-me-down, but it’s a significant concern for anyone using mobile banking, making payments, or handling sensitive data on a primary device.
- iPhone 11 (listed but flagged): The iPhone 11 128GB is genuinely end-of-life. Don’t buy this as a primary phone in 2026 regardless of price.

Know Your Mobile Verdict
The tier list in 2026 is clearer than it’s ever been. Apple Intelligence compatibility has created a hard dividing line: iPhone 15 Pro and newer are fully in; anything with an A15 chip or lower is on the wrong side of it.
If you’re not bothered about AI features, Apple’s iPhone 14 series, iPhone 15 series, and even the iPhone 13 series all represent awesome value for money.
For most buyers, the midrange tier is the right call. Specifically the iPhone 16 or iPhone 15 Pro.
Both deliver an experience that will feel current for the next three to four years, at prices that make the refurbished argument essentially unanswerable.
I recently switched from an iPhone 13 to this refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max model and the difference is like night and day. It feels like a massive upgrade despite the fact the phone is 24 months old, and not the current flagship.
Best bit? I paid less for the iPhone 15 Pro Max than I would for a base model iPhone 17 new. Crazy.
Pro Tip: The single biggest mistake buyers make on the refurbished market is buying the cheapest iPhone they can find rather than the best iPhone they can comfortably afford. An iPhone 13 at $300 looks attractive until you factor in that you’ll be replacing it in 18 months. An iPhone 15 at $450 is the smarter maths. Buy up the tiers as far as your budget allows — you’ll spend less overall.
