5 Potentially Massive Problems With Apple’s iPhone Duo…

The Short Version

The iPhone Duo Looks Impressive. The Price Is The Problem.

The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone. It has two displays, the A20 Pro chip, Apple’s C2 modem and up to 2TB of storage. It also starts at $1,999, uses Touch ID and misses out on the dedicated telephoto camera fitted to Apple’s Pro Max phones.

$1,999 Starting Price
5.4in + 7.6in Outer And Inner Displays
A20 Pro Apple Chip
256GB–2TB Storage Options

The Five Big iPhone Duo Problems

1
It Is Very Expensive

The $1,999 starting price comes before tax, AppleCare, a case or any storage upgrade.

2
Refurbished Pro Max Phones Cost Far Less

Refurbished iPhone 16 Pro Max deals start from $770.96, while iPhone 15 Pro Max prices start from $589.

3
The Camera System Is Not Apple’s Best

The Duo has two rear cameras and no dedicated telephoto lens. The iPhone 18 Pro Max gets Apple’s complete Pro camera system.

4
It Uses Touch ID Instead Of Face ID

Touch ID in the side button may work perfectly well, but it remains an obvious compromise on Apple’s most expensive iPhone.

5
It Is A First-Generation Foldable

Apple says the Duo is durable. Even so, the hinge, folding display and potential repair costs are worth watching before spending $1,999.

Who Should Buy It?

The iPhone Duo is for people who specifically want a folding iPhone and are willing to pay for the first generation. Everyone else should compare it with a refurbished Pro Max before spending the money.

A refurbished iPhone 16 Pro Max currently starts from $770.96. That is $1,228.04 less than the starting price of the iPhone Duo.

Apple’s foldable iPhone is official. It is called iPhone Duo, not iPhone Ultra, not iPhone Fold, and not some rumoured placeholder name that will vanish before launch.

It is also not cheap.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, opens for pre-order on October 16 and becomes available from October 23 in more than 70 countries, including the UK and US. Another 28 countries get it from October 30.

On paper, the hardware is seriously impressive: 7.6-inch folding inner display, 5.4-inch outer display, A20 Pro chip, titanium frame, dual batteries, Apple C2 modem, 48MP Dual Fusion cameras and Apple Pencil support.

But now the specs are confirmed, the compromises are clearer too.

The iPhone Duo is not just an expensive iPhone. It is an expensive iPhone with fewer rear cameras than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, Touch ID instead of Face ID, first-generation foldable hardware and a starting price that makes refurbished Pro Max iPhones look almost absurdly good.

So, yes, the iPhone Duo is exciting.

It also has five big problems.

The spec sheet is not the issue. The iPhone Duo is clearly a high-end device.

The problem is what Apple had to leave out, and what else you can buy for the same money.

1. The iPhone Duo Is Too Expensive For Most Buyers

5 major problems with Apple's iPhone Ultra

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999.

That is the base model with 256GB of storage. Apple also offers 512GB, 1TB and 2TB versions, so higher-capacity models will cost even more.

Then you need to think about the stuff nobody likes thinking about:

Apple’s own iPhone Duo Case is $79. The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand is $129.

So the real-world cost of owning one can move well north of $2,000 very quickly.

For some buyers, that will not matter. The first folding iPhone is exactly the kind of product early adopters will buy on day one, because it is new, rare and different.

But for normal iPhone buyers, $1,999 is a brutal starting point.

At that price, the Duo does not just need to be good. It needs to be good enough to make a normal Pro Max look boring.

That is a much harder job.

2. Refurbished Pro Max iPhones Make The Duo Look Poor Value

best refurbished pink iphone to buy 2026

This is the Duo’s biggest problem.

Apple wants $1,999 for the cheapest iPhone Duo. KnowYourMobile’s refurbished phone collections currently list much cheaper Pro Max options:

PhoneKYM refurb starting priceDuo price difference
iPhone Duo$1,999Baseline
iPhone 17 Pro Max$1,399Duo costs $600 more
iPhone 16 Pro Max$770.96Duo costs $1,228.04 more
iPhone 15 Pro Max$589Duo costs $1,410 more
iPhone 14 Pro Max$466Duo costs $1,533 more
iPhone 13 Pro Max$388.34Duo costs $1,610.66 more

Prices move, obviously. Refurbished deals change all the time.

But the gap is not small.

At KYM’s current tracked starting prices, the iPhone Duo costs about 2.6 times more than a refurbished iPhone 16 Pro Max. It costs more than three iPhone 15 Pro Max refurb units. It costs more than five iPhone 13 Pro Max refurb units.

And those are not bad phones.

A refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max still gives you:

The Duo gives you the folding screen. That is the reason to buy it.

But if you simply want a premium iPhone with a big screen, a refurbished Pro Max is wildly better value.

3. The Camera System Is Not As Good As The iPhone 18 Pro Max

iphone-18-pro-will-also-feature-apples-new-c2-chip

The iPhone Duo has a good camera system but it’s no where near as good as what you get on the cheaper iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Apple gives the Duo two rear cameras:

That is strong for a foldable. It will be more than enough for normal photos, video, social clips, FaceTime and family stuff.

But the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have Apple’s 48MP Pro Fusion camera system.

That includes:

The Duo has no dedicated telephoto camera.

That matters more than Apple will want to admit.

You will notice it with:

Apple has added Duo-specific camera tricks, including Duo Preview, Smart Take and Kid Cue. Fine. They sound useful.

But they do not replace a proper telephoto lens.

This is the odd bit: Apple’s most expensive iPhone is not Apple’s best camera phone.

If you care about photography, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is still the better choice.

4. Touch ID Replaces Face ID

The iPhone Duo uses Touch ID in the side button.

This is probably the correct engineering decision. A folding design needs to work open, closed, sideways, propped up and at weird angles. A side-mounted fingerprint sensor keeps authentication simple across all those modes.

But it still feels like a compromise.

Apple has trained premium iPhone buyers to expect Face ID. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has it. Older Pro Max models have it. Most people buying a high-end iPhone already know how it works and barely think about it.

On the Duo, you are paying $1,999 and going back to a fingerprint sensor.

That will be fine for some people. It may even be better in certain desk and folded positions.

But it is another example of the foldable design forcing Apple to make a trade.

The Duo is not simply “the best iPhone, but foldable.” It is a different type of iPhone, with different compromises.

5. First-Generation Foldable Hardware Is Still A Risk

Apple says the iPhone Duo is durable.

The hardware looks serious: Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, Ceramic Shield on the back, scratch-resistant coating on the inner display and IP68 water and dust resistance.

That is all good.

But this is still Apple’s first foldable iPhone.

The parts to watch are obvious:

Apple may have solved a lot of the usual foldable problems. It also had years to watch Samsung, Google, Motorola and others make mistakes.

Still, first-generation hardware is first-generation hardware.

If you buy one at launch, you are helping find out how well it ages.

That is fine if you know what you are getting into. It is less fine if you keep phones for four or five years and hate dealing with repairs.

The Duo’s Biggest Problem Is Not Samsung. It Is Apple’s Own Used iPhones

The iPhone Duo does not need to beat the Galaxy Z Fold for most iPhone buyers.

It needs to beat the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the iPhone 17 Pro Max and the growing pile of refurbished Pro Max phones that cost far less.

That is where the pitch gets difficult.

The Duo wins on:

The Pro Max wins on:

If you are buying the Duo, you are buying the fold.

That has to be the point. If you do not actively want the folding screen, the rest of the value argument falls apart pretty quickly.

Should You Buy The iPhone Duo?

Buy the iPhone Duo if you really want Apple’s first foldable iPhone and you know you will use the inner display every day.

It makes sense for:

Do not buy it just because it is the most expensive iPhone.

That is not the same thing as being the best iPhone.

If you want the most interesting iPhone Apple has made in years and you are happy with the trade-offs, the Duo is the one.

Our Take

The iPhone Duo is exciting, but the confirmed specs make the buying decision clearer.

It is a first-generation foldable iPhone with a huge inner display, proper flagship chip, strong build, dual batteries and clever software ideas. Apple has not phoned this in.

But it starts at $1,999, skips the Pro Max telephoto camera, uses Touch ID instead of Face ID and asks buyers to trust a folding display from day one.

That is a lot to accept when refurbished Pro Max iPhones are now available for just a few hundred dollars.

The iPhone Duo is for people who want a folding iPhone more than they want the best value iPhone.

Everyone else should check the refurb Pro Max prices first. The maths is not kind to the Duo.
