Galaxy S27 Pro vs Galaxy S27 Ultra: Smaller Could Actually Be Better?

The Galaxy S27 Ultra will almost certainly be Samsung’s most capable phone in 2027. But it may not be the Galaxy S27 model most people should buy.

That honour could go to the new Galaxy S27 Pro.

Samsung is reportedly preparing the Pro as a smaller alternative to the Ultra, not simply a slightly better Galaxy S27+. It is expected to share much of the Ultra’s display, camera and performance hardware while dropping the built-in S Pen and shrinking the screen from roughly 6.9 inches to 6.47 inches.

For anyone who has wanted Samsung’s best cameras without carrying a very large phone, this is exactly the model the Galaxy range has been missing.

The Ultra will still have reasons to exist. Its larger battery, bigger canvas, long-range zoom, S Pen and probable worldwide Snapdragon processor should make it the stronger phone for a specific kind of buyer. The question is whether those extras are worth the added size and price.

Here is how the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra are expected to compare, why Samsung is creating both, and which one is likely to suit you better.

Important: Samsung has not announced either phone. This comparison is based on current industry reporting and leaks as of August 2026. Final specifications, names and prices may change before the expected early-2027 launch.

Galaxy S27 Pro vs Galaxy S27 Ultra: Expected Differences

This table makes the Ultra look like the easy winner because it has more hardware. That misses the point of the Pro.

The Pro’s main benefit is not a specification the Ultra lacks. It is the absence of the Ultra’s bulk.

Why Is Samsung Making A Galaxy S27 Pro?

Samsung has offered one true premium Galaxy S phone for years: the Ultra. The standard and Plus models share most of their hardware, while the Ultra gets the 200MP camera, best zoom system, S Pen and other top-tier features.

That forces buyers into a fairly blunt choice. Want Samsung’s best camera? Buy the biggest phone. Want the S Pen? Same answer. Want the most powerful version in some markets? Again, Ultra.

The Galaxy S27 Pro should split that premium tier in two.

ETNews reports that Samsung plans to add a second high-end model which drops the Ultra’s pen but shares most of its other technology. A later report points to a 6.47-inch OLED display, giving the Pro a footprint much closer to a normal phone.

This is also Samsung’s answer to the smaller iPhone Pro. Apple has long allowed buyers to get its high-end processor and strong camera system without choosing the largest Pro Max. Samsung has never offered a clean equivalent.

The failed Galaxy S25 Edge helps explain the change in strategy. That phone asked buyers to pay premium money for thinness while accepting a smaller battery and reduced camera hardware. The market was not impressed.

The S27 Pro appears to reverse that idea. Instead of making a thin phone by removing useful hardware, Samsung may make a compact premium phone by removing the one feature many buyers never use: the S Pen.

That is a much easier sales pitch.

Size & Design: The Pro’s Biggest Advantage

The Galaxy S27 Pro is reported to use a 6.47-inch display, while the S27 Ultra is expected to remain close to 6.9 inches.

On paper, 0.43 inches does not sound enormous. In your hand and pocket, it can completely change how a phone feels.

A 6.9-inch Ultra is excellent for editing photos, watching video, gaming and running two apps side by side. It also occupies a lot of pocket space, can be tiring to hold in bed and is difficult to use one-handed unless you have very large hands.

The Pro should be easier to:

• Use with one hand
• Fit into a trouser or jacket pocket
• Hold for long camera sessions
• Mount in a car
• Carry while running or travelling
• Use without constantly worrying about dropping it

This is not a minor lifestyle difference. You interact with a phone dozens or hundreds of times a day. A slightly smaller device can be more pleasant every single time you pick it up.

The Ultra will probably retain a titanium frame and built-in S Pen slot. Materials for the Pro are not yet known, although Samsung will need to make it feel suitably premium if it plans to charge more than the S27+.

Size winner: Galaxy S27 Pro for most people

Choose the Ultra only if you actively want the largest possible screen. Do not buy it merely because the word “Ultra” sounds better.

Display: Same Privacy Trick, Different Canvas

Both models are expected to receive Samsung’s Privacy Display technology.

First introduced on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, Privacy Display narrows the screen’s visible viewing angle. Someone beside you on a train or plane sees less of your messages, banking app or work documents, while the screen remains clear when viewed directly.

According to ETNews, Samsung plans to increase the number of premium phones with this display technology from one to two. Those phones are expected to be the S27 Pro and Ultra.

Both should also use adaptive 120Hz OLED panels. The Ultra will likely retain a higher QHD+ resolution, while the Pro’s exact resolution is unknown.

The practical choice comes down to size:

• The Pro’s 6.47-inch screen should be large enough for video, photography and gaming without dominating the phone.
• The Ultra’s roughly 6.9-inch screen will be better for handwriting, drawing, spreadsheets, split-screen apps and long viewing sessions.

Display winner: Galaxy S27 Ultra, if you will use the extra space

For ordinary phone use, the Pro’s display may be the better balance. The Ultra wins only when screen area is part of the reason you are buying it.

Cameras: 3x On The Pro, 5x On The Ultra

Early reports suggested the Pro might receive exactly the same rear camera system as the Ultra. Newer reporting describes a more sensible split.

9to5Google’s summary of Korean industry reporting gives the expected cameras as:

• 16MP front camera rumoured elsewhere

Galaxy S27 Ultra cameras

• 200MP main camera
• 50MP ultrawide camera
• 50MP 5x periscope telephoto camera
• 16MP front camera rumoured elsewhere

Both are expected to use three rear cameras. Samsung may remove the Ultra’s separate 3x telephoto lens to control manufacturing costs, leaving its 5x camera to handle longer-range shots.

The key question is whether the Pro and Ultra use the same main camera sensor, not merely the same 200MP resolution. Two sensors can share a megapixel count and produce very different results. Sensor size, lens aperture, readout speed and processing matter more than the number printed on the box.

Current reports say the Pro will share much of the Ultra’s premium camera hardware, but we should not assume total parity until component details appear.

When the Pro’s 3x zoom may be better

Three-times zoom is useful for:

• Portraits
• Pets and children across a room
• Food and product photography
• Stage shots from relatively close seats
• Framing details without stepping too far back

It is a very practical focal length. If most of your zoom photos are portraits and everyday subjects, the Pro may cover your needs perfectly well.

When the Ultra’s 5x zoom will be better

Five-times optical zoom makes more sense for:

• Concerts and sporting events
• Wildlife
• Architecture
• Travel landmarks
• Subjects across a road or large room
• Cropping further into 10x and beyond

The Ultra’s 50MP telephoto also gives Samsung more image data for cropping than the rumoured 10MP camera on the Pro.

Camera winner: Galaxy S27 Ultra

The Ultra should win for zoom, but the Pro may provide nearly the same results at 1x and ultrawide. That would make it the smarter camera phone for anyone who rarely shoots beyond 3x.

S Pen: The Clearest Reason To Buy The Ultra

The Galaxy S27 Pro is not expected to support the S Pen. The S27 Ultra should retain the pen and its built-in storage slot.

Samsung reportedly considered replacing the Ultra’s traditional display digitiser with a thinner pen-input system, but ETNews says that plan was postponed. The existing electromagnetic pen system is expected to continue.

The S Pen matters if you regularly:

• Handwrite notes
• Sign or mark up documents
• Edit photos precisely
• Draw or sketch
• Select small interface elements
• Use the pen as a remote camera shutter
• Translate or select text from awkward places

If any of those form part of your weekly routine, get the Ultra. The Pro is not a substitute.

If your current Galaxy has an S Pen and it has remained inside the phone for six months, the Pro is probably designed for you.

S Pen winner: Galaxy S27 Ultra, obviously

But a feature only has worth when you use it. Carrying a larger phone for an untouched pen makes little sense.

Performance: The Regional Chip Split Could Matter

The Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro worldwide.

The Galaxy S27 Pro may use the same Snapdragon chip in the US, Canada and China, but switch to Samsung’s Exynos 2700 in the UK, Europe and several other markets.

Neither processor is official. We cannot say that one will be faster, cooler or more efficient until production phones can be tested side by side.

The Exynos name will still worry some buyers. Previous Galaxy generations sometimes showed differences between Exynos and Snapdragon versions in battery life, gaming, modem behaviour and sustained performance. Recent Samsung chips have narrowed the gap, but customers buying the same named phone reasonably expect the same experience.

This creates a positioning problem:

• A US S27 Pro buyer may get the same core processor family as the Ultra for less money.
• A UK S27 Pro buyer may need to choose between a compact Exynos phone and a larger Snapdragon Ultra.

For messaging, social apps, web browsing and photography, either chip should be extremely fast. The split matters more to heavy gamers, video editors, emulator users and anyone keeping the phone for many years.

Performance winner: Galaxy S27 Ultra

Not because the Exynos 2700 is known to be poor. It is not. The Ultra wins because a worldwide Snapdragon policy would remove uncertainty.

Battery Life: Capacity Is Not The Whole Story

The S27 Pro is tipped to carry a battery of roughly 5,000 to 5,200mAh. The Ultra could reach approximately 5,700 to 5,800mAh.

Both would be impressive changes. Samsung has held the Ultra at 5,000mAh since the S20 Ultra, while rival brands have used silicon-carbon battery chemistry to fit more capacity into similar spaces.

The Ultra clearly wins on raw capacity. It also has a larger display to power, however, so the real battery-life gap may be smaller than 500 to 800mAh suggests.

The Pro could be remarkably efficient if it combines:

• A roughly 5,200mAh battery
• A smaller 6.47-inch OLED panel
• An efficient 2nm processor
• Samsung’s usual adaptive refresh rate controls

It could potentially match or beat the Ultra in lighter daily use. The Ultra should retain the advantage during long camera sessions, navigation, hotspot use and gaming because its larger cell provides more absolute energy.

Charging figures for the Pro have not been reliably established. The Ultra is expected to retain 65W wired charging. Proper magnetic Qi2 charging remains possible for both, but is not confirmed.

Battery winner: Too early to call

The Ultra wins capacity. The Pro may win efficiency. Wait for real testing before treating either as the battery champion.

Price: The Pro Has To Be Noticeably Cheaper

Samsung has not confirmed pricing, but the S27 Pro is expected to sit between the S27+ and Ultra.

Based on the S26 range, a rough US structure could look like this:

Samsung needs at least a $150 to $200 gap between the Pro and Ultra. If the difference is only $50, buyers may choose the Ultra for its S Pen, larger battery and 5x camera even when they would prefer the Pro’s size.

The company also cannot place the Pro too close to the Plus without making that model irrelevant.

This is the tightrope:

• The Plus sells screen size at a lower price.
• The Pro sells premium cameras in a smaller body.
• The Ultra sells everything Samsung can fit into a conventional phone.

The Pro makes sense at around $1,199 if the Ultra starts at $1,399. It becomes harder to defend at $1,299 against a $1,349 Ultra.

Price winner: Galaxy S27 Pro, probably

But the Pro only represents better value if Samsung preserves the Ultra-level parts buyers actually care about.

Galaxy S27 Pro: Who Is It Best For?

The Pro is likely to be best for:

People who want a smaller flagship

This is the obvious group. You no longer need to tolerate a 6.9-inch phone just to get Samsung’s 200MP camera and premium display technology.

Camera users who mainly shoot between 0.6x and 3x

If you take family photos, portraits, food, pets and city shots, the Pro’s expected camera range should cover almost everything you do.

Buyers who do not use the S Pen

The S Pen is brilliant for the people who need it and dead weight for everybody else. The Pro removes it and uses the space for a more compact design.

People upgrading from a standard Galaxy S or iPhone Pro

The Pro should feel familiar in size while offering Samsung’s top-level camera and Android features.

Anyone who keeps a phone in a pocket rather than a bag

The difference between manageable and annoying becomes very clear after several hours away from home.

Galaxy S27 Ultra: Who Is It Best For?

The Ultra is likely to be best for:

S Pen users

There is no debate here. If the pen is part of how you work, the Ultra is the model to buy.

Long-range camera users

The 50MP 5x periscope should produce better concert, wildlife, sports and travel shots than the Pro’s reported 10MP 3x camera.

Mobile gamers and power users

A larger body has more room for cooling, while the expected worldwide Snapdragon chip removes the regional processor question.

People who watch lots of video on their phone

The 6.9-inch display will be better for Netflix, YouTube, cloud gaming and reading documents.

Buyers who need the largest battery and storage options

The Ultra should offer the biggest cell and is more likely to reach 1TB of storage.

Which One Would I Choose?

Based on what is currently reported, I would choose the Galaxy S27 Pro.

The Ultra will win a straight specification contest. It will have the better zoom camera, larger battery, bigger display, S Pen and probably the cleaner processor story.

But I do not need an S Pen every day, and I rarely need 5x optical zoom. I would notice the Pro’s smaller body every time I picked it up. If its main and ultrawide cameras really match the Ultra and its battery lands around 5,200mAh, that is the better everyday combination.

The Ultra makes sense when you can name the Ultra-only feature you need. If your answer is simply “it is the best one,” the Pro may save you money and be nicer to live with.

Should You Wait For Either Phone?

Both models are expected in early 2027, so waiting makes sense if you specifically want Samsung’s new compact premium phone or the first Ultra battery increase in years.

It makes less sense if you need a phone now. The Galaxy S27 range is still months away, none of these specifications is official and launch pricing will be high.

A refurbished Galaxy S24 Ultra already provides a 200MP camera, 5x optical zoom, built-in S Pen and years of remaining software support for far less than a new S27 Ultra is likely to cost.

Early Verdict

The Galaxy S27 Pro looks like the better phone for most buyers. It should deliver the parts of the Ultra people actually want, namely its main camera, premium display and high-end performance, without forcing them into a 6.9-inch body.

The Galaxy S27 Ultra will still be the better tool. Its S Pen, 5x telephoto, larger display, bigger battery and worldwide Snapdragon chip should make it the right choice for artists, note-takers, serious zoom users, gamers and anyone replacing a phone with a laptop-like device.

Put simply:

• Galaxy S27 Pro: the premium Samsung phone designed around daily comfort.
• Galaxy S27 Ultra: the premium Samsung phone designed around maximum capability.

If Samsung leaves a proper price gap between them, the choice should be refreshingly easy.
