5 Epic Pixel 11 Alternatives That Are Cheaper & Just As Good

The Google Pixel 11 is a very good phone. It’s also $899.

And while Google has added a faster Tensor G6 processor, a 5x telephoto camera, Pixelsnap charging and several new AI tools, I’m not convinced everybody needs to spend nearly $900 to get a good Pixel experience.

In fact, some older Pixels give you better hardware in a few important areas. The Pixel 9 Pro, for instance, has more RAM, a sharper LTPO display and a considerably better telephoto camera than the standard Pixel 11. It also currently costs less than half as much.

That makes the Pixel 9 series particularly hard to ignore.

1. Google Pixel 9 Pro: the best Pixel 11 alternative overall

Price: From $436.79
You save: $462.21

This is the one I’d buy.

The Pixel 9 Pro might be two generations old, but calling it inferior to the standard Pixel 11 would be misleading. In several areas, it is actually the better-equipped phone.

The Pixel 9 Pro has:

• A sharper 1280 × 2856 resolution

The standard Pixel 11 has 12GB of RAM, a lower-resolution 60Hz to 120Hz display, a 13MP ultrawide camera, a 10.8MP telephoto camera and a 10.5MP front camera.

Yes, the Pixel 11 has the newer Tensor G6 processor and can reach 30x zoom. But the Pixel 9 Pro starts with much stronger camera hardware. It also gives you the smoother and more power-efficient LTPO screen Google reserves for its Pro phones.

The Pixel 11 will be faster when running demanding on-device AI models, games and heavy editing tools. For normal use, though, the Pixel 9 Pro is still fast, responsive and loaded with RAM.

Email, Chrome, YouTube, social apps, photography, navigation and messaging aren’t suddenly going to feel ancient because you’re using Tensor G4 instead of Tensor G6.

Call Notes can also create a private transcript and summary after a call. If a mechanic, contractor or insurance company gives you a list of details over the phone, you don’t need to remember the lot or scramble around looking for a pen.

The newer Pixel 11 does have exclusive features, including Gemini Intelligence, Magic Capture, Camera Looks and the Creator Suite. But the Pixel 9 Pro already covers most of the Pixel AI tools people are likely to use regularly.

At just $436.79, that is an absurd amount of phone for the money.

2. Google Pixel 9 Pro XL: best for a large display

Price: From $411
You save: $488

Oddly, the larger Pixel 9 Pro XL is currently cheaper than the smaller Pixel 9 Pro.

That can happen with refurbished phones because prices are based on stock, storage, colour, condition and retailer demand. It doesn’t mean the XL is the lesser phone.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL gives you:

Google itself states that the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL share the same main specifications and features. The main differences are screen size, battery capacity and charging speed.

That means you aren’t buying a weaker phone by choosing the XL. You’re getting the same Pro camera system and 16GB of RAM, only with a larger screen and battery.

It’s the obvious choice if you watch a lot of video, edit photos, use split-screen apps or simply prefer a larger phone.

At from $411, you’re saving $488 against the standard Pixel 11 while getting better camera hardware, more RAM and a larger LTPO display.

The downsides? It’s big and weighs 221g. If you want something that disappears into a pocket, get the smaller Pixel 9 Pro.

3. Google Pixel 9: the best affordable all-rounder

Price: From $356
You save: $543

The regular Pixel 9 is the safest recommendation for somebody who doesn’t need a telephoto camera.

It has the same compact 6.3-inch display size as the Pixel 11, 12GB of RAM and the Tensor G4 processor. Its camera system includes a 50MP main sensor and 48MP ultrawide camera, the same two main cameras used by the Pixel 9 Pro models.

That 48MP ultrawide is worth noting because the standard Pixel 11 uses a much smaller 13MP ultrawide camera.

The Pixel 11 wins for zoom because it has a dedicated 5x telephoto lens. If you photograph concerts, wildlife, sports or distant buildings, that difference matters.

But if most of your pictures are people, pets, food, holidays and everyday family stuff, the Pixel 9’s main and ultrawide cameras remain excellent.

Google said the Pixel 9’s display was 35% brighter than the Pixel 8 display and that its active-use battery life was approximately 20% longer.

That’s a very large premium for a phone that performs essentially the same basic jobs.

4. Google Pixel 8a: the best cheap Pixel

Price: From $227
You save: $672

The Pixel 8a isn’t a direct hardware match for the Pixel 11. It has less RAM, an older processor and a simpler camera system.

But it costs $227.

At that price, the question isn’t whether the Pixel 11 is technically better. Of course it is. The question is whether it is almost four times better.

For most people, it isn’t.

The Pixel 8a gives you:

It’s smaller than the Pixel 11, which might actually be a bonus if you’re tired of huge phones.

You lose the Pixel 11’s telephoto camera, faster Tensor G6 chip, 12GB of RAM, brighter display, Pixelsnap charging and newest local AI tools. The Pixel 8a also uses thicker bezels and cheaper materials.

Even so, it still feels like a proper Pixel. You get Google’s clean Android interface, very good point-and-shoot photography, spam protection, Call Screen, regular Pixel Drops and a long update commitment.

For a teenager, a spare phone, a first Pixel or somebody who simply doesn’t want to spend hundreds more than necessary, the Pixel 8a at $227 is extremely difficult to beat.

5. Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: the foldable alternative

Price: From $850
You save: $49 versus the standard Pixel 11

This one is different.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold isn’t the sensible cheap alternative. It is the option for somebody considering a Pixel 11 but secretly wanting a folding phone.

At $850, it costs $49 less than the standard Pixel 11 and $1,049 less than the new $1,899 Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

That completely changes the argument.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has:

• 6.3-inch external display
• 8-inch internal folding display
• Tensor G4 processor
• 16GB of RAM
• Triple rear-camera system
• 5x optical telephoto camera
• Gemini and Pixel 9 AI tools
• Seven years of updates from launch
• IPX8 water resistance
• Wireless charging

When closed, you can use it like a normal Pixel. Open it and you have a small tablet for reading, video, maps, spreadsheets, photo editing and running apps side by side.

There are trade-offs. Foldables are heavier, more fragile and considerably more expensive to repair than standard phones. The cameras are good, but the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL have stronger camera hardware.

Google also operates an extended warranty programme for certain Pixel 9 Pro Fold devices affected by specific functional problems. That doesn’t mean every unit is defective, but it does mean I would check the device’s warranty status, seller guarantee and return policy before buying one.

If you just want a reliable phone, buy the Pixel 9 Pro. If you genuinely want the folding display, however, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold at $850 offers far more interesting hardware than the standard Pixel 11 for slightly less money.

Pixel 9 phones still have years of updates left

One of the old arguments against buying a previous-generation Android phone was software support.

You’d save money upfront, only to discover that your phone had one or two Android upgrades left. That isn’t the case with these Pixels.

Google provides Pixel 8 and newer phones with seven years of:

• Android operating-system updates
• Security updates
• Pixel Drops
• New and updated software features

The seven-year period starts when each phone first went on sale through the US Google Store.

Based on their original release dates:

The Pixel 11 has roughly two additional years at the other end. That matters if you plan to keep it until 2033.

But a Pixel 9 purchased today still has around five years of official support remaining. Realistically, that is longer than many people keep the same phone.

You aren’t buying something that Google is about to abandon. Google’s update policy covers the Pixel 9 series well into the next decade.

Does the Pixel 11 have better AI?

Yes, but the answer needs some context.

Tensor G6 gives the Pixel 11 more processing power for local AI. Google says it can process on-device AI tasks up to 3.5 times faster while using less power than its previous platform.

The Pixel 11 also introduces features including:

The Pixel 11 is the better choice if you actively want Google’s newest AI tools and intend to use them. If AI is something you dip into occasionally, the Pixel 9 series already does plenty.

What do you actually lose by skipping the Pixel 11?

The Pixel 11 has several real advantages:

But you need to place them against the prices.

• A Pixel 9 Pro at $436.79 costs $462.21 less and gives you a higher-resolution LTPO screen, 16GB of RAM, a 48MP 5x telephoto camera and a 42MP selfie camera.
• A Pixel 9 Pro XL at $411 saves even more while adding a 6.8-inch display and 5,060mAh battery.

The Pixel 11 is newer. That doesn’t automatically make it the better purchase.

What to check when buying a cheaper Pixel

These deals may include refurbished or renewed phones, so check the individual listing before ordering.

Pay attention to:

• Cosmetic condition
• Battery-health policy
• Warranty length
• Return period
• Storage capacity
• Carrier compatibility
• Whether the phone is fully unlocked
• Whether replacement parts have been used
• Whether accessories are included

A few marks on the frame can be a very fair trade if they knock hundreds of dollars off the price. A weak battery or carrier-locked device is a different matter.

I’d favour a phone with a clear warranty and straightforward returns over saving another $10 or $20 with a seller that tells you almost nothing about the device.

Which Pixel 11 alternative should you buy?

For most people, buy the Google Pixel 9 Pro.

It is compact, fast, supported until 2031 and has a better display, more RAM and stronger camera hardware than the standard Pixel 11. At $436.79, it costs less than half the Pixel 11’s launch price.

If you want a bigger screen, the Pixel 9 Pro XL at $411 is arguably an even better deal.

The Pixel 9 at $356 is the sensible middle option, while the Pixel 8a at $227 is the one to buy if price matters more than telephoto cameras and new AI features.

The Pixel 11 is better in some areas. It should be. It’s newer and costs $899.

But if what you really want is an excellent camera, clean Android software, Google’s AI tools and another five years of updates, you can get all of that for hundreds of dollars less.
