Keeping in touch on the move can include using mobile email. So let's take a look at how you get that working on the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music

When it comes to mobile email you need to spend a little time setting up you Nokia 5300 Xpress Music but you only need to do this once. With the set-up out of the way, the phone is ready to handle email wherever you are.

You might find it is convenient to use Nokia’s over the air setup service, which you will find here. This can automatically configure your handset by sending a SMS to it. It has pre-configured settings for a number of different email providers. You need to fill in some information at the Web page, and then you’ll be sent the SMS.

Below we show you how to set up the phone manually.

You should scan the rest of this article before you start working. You need to enter some information, and it will be useful to have this at your fingertips before you start. If you are not sure of any of the required information check with your ISP rather than guessing as the email on the phone won’t work if any of it is incorrect.

Set up your mailbox

Tap the middle Selection key in the centre of the navigation button to choose Menu. Next choose Messaging. Now scroll down to where it says E-mail and select.

The Settings Wizard will start running. Choose OK with the middle Selection key. On the next screen scroll through the list of email providers. If yours is there choose it with the middle Selection key.

If it is not there choose Other.

Next enter the information requested which is: your full name and your full email address. If predictive text entry is turned on you can disable it by holding down the # key and then choosing Prediction off. You can get the ‘@’ symbol by holding down the * key, and the dot by pressing the 1 key.

When you have entered this information choose OK with the middle select key.

On the next screen enter information about incoming email. Choose server type – POP or IMAP, edit the information under ‘server name’ and under ‘your user name for the incoming mail server’ so that they are correct and enter your login password. Then choose OK with the middle select key.

On the next screen enter the name of your outgoing mail server. This may be your Internet Service Provider’s or it may be one provided by your network operator. You need also to make the appropriate password settings on this screen.

On the next screens you can choose to configure advanced settings. If you don’t do this now you can come back and do it later by going to the list of email accounts you have set up and choosing Edit with the middle Selection key, then choosing either Advanced receiving or Advanced sending. You can also edit the other settings made above from here.

To configure the advanced settings choose Yes with the middle Selection key.

Now on the next two screens you can make several settings including:

- how much of each new email to download
- whether to leave emails on the server after downloading them. If you do this, you can pick them up again later from your main computer. If you choose to delete them from the server they will be gone forever and you won’t be able to pick them up on your main computer later on
- how many emails to retrieve at a time and the maximum size to download
- whether to include a reply address and signature on emails you send

Finally you need to set up a name for the email account. Make sure it is meaningful and then choose Save with the middle Selection key.

You can look at our Internet Settings chart here
