Windows Phone 7 is winning, says Microsoft

Windows Phone 7 now has 11,500 applications and 36,000 developers working on the platform, says Microsoft

Microsoft has been trumpeting the successes of its Windows Phone 7 platform with the release of some official figures this week.

Windows Phone 7 now has 11,500 applications in its Marketplace and 36,000 developers creating content for the platform, which isn’t bad for just one year’s work.

Microsoft was also keen to stress that it wasn’t ‘tweaking’ the figures either by including things like Wallpaper apps and the amount of times developers have downloaded the Windows Phone 7 SDK.

Instead, Microsoft has only included core apps – i.e. ones that are actually applications, in that they do something – and registered AppHub members.

Both figures – 11,500 apps and 36,000 developers – are pretty impressive. And when you consider the recent Nokia partnership, things are certainly looking rosy for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform.

But that’s not all. Microsoft also has some stats on its users as well. According to the report, the average Windows Phone 7 user downloads 12 applications a month.

Here are some other interesting stats via The Windows Phone Developer Blog:

  • 44% - Of all the paid apps in the Marketplace, 44% of them include access to a Trial version. Our developers rely on the Trial API available for Windows Phone 7 to drive consumer confidence in their purchases.
  • 40% - The statistic that gets me the most excited and speaks the most to the work my team has yet to do is the percentage of registered developers who have published their apps.
  • Microsoft will be outlining what we can expect for the rest of 2011 at this year’s MIX11 starting April 12.
  • Expect lots of new updates, figures, stats and reports during and after this.
