Windows Phone 8 GDR 3 update brings even more Tiles
Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 GDR 3 update will add yet more Live Tiles to your handset’s homescreen
Microsoft’s incoming Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update, the one tipped to add support for quad-core processors and large-form 1080p displays, will also add an additional column of Live Tiles.
News of the additional column of Live Tiles comes via ZDNet’s Microsoft sage, Mary J Foley. ‘Along with the higher resolution,’ writes Foley, ‘GDR3 also could include changes in the start screen and core Windows Phone 8 apps, such as possibly adding a third column of mid-size-tiled apps in the start screen.’
The report does not confirm the addition nor does it explain how it will be implemented on legacy Windows Phone handsets – is it for 1080p displays only, or will Microsoft bring it to WVGA and 720p setups, too?
There’s no concrete release date in place for Windows Phone GDR 3 as yet, although sources close to Microsoft have confirmed that it will launch before the close of the year.
Adding support for Qualcomm’s next generation chipsets – the 600 and 800 –as well as larger form display sizes at higher resolutions should bring Windows Phone handsets back in line with current top tier Android devices like the Galaxy S4 and HTC One.
Nokia, HTC, Samsung, and Huawei were Microsoft’s launch partners for Windows Phone 8, and we’d expect to see all of them back to take advantage GDR 3’s added functionality and capabilities.
More news as we get it.
