80-inch Windows 8 tablet adorns Steve Ballmer’s office wall
Microsoft has a working Windows 8 tablet with an 80-inch display - it’s hanging on the wall of Steve Ballmer’s office
Steve Ballmer has the world’s first 80-inch Windows 8-powered tablet mounted on the wall of his office.
To normal people this may sound ridiculous but what you have to bare in mind is that this is Steve Ballmer: the billionaire CEO of the world’s biggest software company.
But while it does all sound rather decadent, a luxury of being one of Silicon Valley’s chieftains, if you will, this monster of a device will actually be made available to the public.
Speaking to Wired about Ballmer’s 80-inch wall-mounted Windows 8 tablet, Microsoft Vice President Frank Shaw said: ‘He’s got rid of his phone, he’s got rid of his note paper. It’s [the tablet] his whiteboard, his email machine, and it’s a device we’re going to sell.’
Just who will buy a tablet this big remains to be seen. Big corporates, millionaires, technologists and, perhaps, Know Your Mobile staff members, are all likely candidates but wider adoption, particularly amongst the general public, will be dependant on how much the slate costs.
Considering the size of the display, though, we’d say you’re looking at price in the thousands, which means it will no doubt be aimed at corporate enterprise users and not Joe Public.
‘The idea that there should be a screen that's not a computer, we'll laugh at that in two years. Every screen should be touch, every screen should be a computer and should be able to see out as well as see in. That is the way the world is heading (and) those screens are going to be big, small, wall-sized and desk-sized,’ added Shaw.
Windows 8 launches in June.
