Asus Padfone 2 UK launch: Asus MWC 2013 rumours
What has Asus got in store for Mobile World Congress? We run through all the rumours ahead of the big event
Asus will likely showcase the previously announced Padfone 2, which combines a smartphone handset and a tablet dock in one package. The phone features a 4.7-inch IPS LCD display with a 720p resolution and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core chipset with 2GB of RAM.
The tablet dock doesn't contain any hardware other than the connectors for the phone, but once plugged in you can make full use of its 10.1-inch display. The phone will come in both 32GB and 64GB variants.
But, Asus may also have a few other devices up its sleeve for the show in Barcelona.
There is talk of a Windows Phone 8 Padfone-like device too, though this is believed to be in the early stages and we may only see a prototype, if anything.
The company has also launched a teaser trailer promising a ‘Metallic Miracle’ and ‘Ultimate Craftsmanship’ strongly hinting at Asus’ penchant for impressive brushed aluminium hardware, though it could be something very different from what we've seen before as the video shows a chrome alien spaceship landing on the Sagrada Familia cathedral.
A rumour has claimed Asus is making its own ‘Nexus 7-like’ tablet powered by an Intel chip with a leaked image suggesting an aluminium chassis. It’ll be Android based rather than a Windows device and is pegged as ‘ultra-budget’.
However, it is said that this device will be held back until May, when Google is due to announce Android version 5.0 (Key Lime Pie) at its I/O conference in San Francisco. Asus only updated the Nexus 7 in November 2012 with 3G at the same time as it announced the LG-manufactured Nexus 4 smartphone.
We’ll probably see further additions to Asus’ Android tablet line-up with the MeMo line and also to the Windows 8/Windows RT catalogue with Vivo branded products.
