Android Garmin Nuvifone in the works

Garmin has plans to launch an Android based navigation-centric device in 2010

Published on Nov 10, 2009

A slide exposing Garmin's plans to release an Android-powered handset has leaked online.

The news came during an earnings call webcast and was spotted by some eagle-eyes over at GSMArena.com, along with the slide that states “We will expand our product family throughout 2010 to include an Android OS handset”.

The family referred to is the Nuvifone range of SatNav centric devices the M20 and G60, neither of which have caused too much of a stir.

The revelation comes following the announcement of Google Maps Navigation and we can't help thinking that jumping from Linux, to Symbian, to Android is a bit of a coincidence, particularly given the impressive demo we've seen so far.

Given Garmin's form in launching the G60 at Mobile World Congress, details of the as yet unnamed Android handset should be expected at the upcoming MWC 2010 in February.
