I used both phones as my daily driver across a working week. Same SIM, same apps, same commute, same bad coffee shop lighting for photos. Here’s what I found.
Day One: The Camera Test
Let’s start with the thing everyone argues about. The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 48MP main sensor, a 5x telephoto, and Apple’s latest image processing chip.
The iPhone 15 has a 48MP main sensor and a 2x telephoto. On paper, the Pro Max wins. In a blind test across 40 photos taken in mixed lighting?
My partner, my colleague, and I each correctly identified the Pro Max shot as “better” fewer than half the time.
The difference shows up clearly in three situations: extreme low light, 5x zoom shots, and very high-contrast scenes. That’s it.
For everything else, Instagram posts, WhatsApp photos, screenshots of receipts, photos of your dog mid-sprint, the gap is invisible.
The verdict: If you’re a professional photographer or you shoot a lot of 5x zoom, buy the Pro Max. If you’re a normal person who takes photos of food and friends, the $380 phone is embarrassing the $1,100 one.
Day Two: Speed and Performance
The iPhone 17 Pro Max runs Apple’s A18 Pro chip. The iPhone 15 runs the A16 Bionic. In benchmarks, the gap is significant. In daily use, I genuinely could not feel it.
Apps opened at the same speed. Scrolling was equally smooth. Videos played without a hitch.
The only moment I noticed the Pro Max pulling ahead was during a sustained burst of photo editing in Lightroom, where the processing was marginally faster. We’re talking seconds.
Here’s the kicker: I did the same comparison with a refurbished Pixel 9, 256GB, unlocked against a brand new Pixel 9 Pro. Same result. Indistinguishable in daily use.
The refurb handled everything I threw at it without breaking a sweat.
💡 The thing nobody tells you: Chip generations are optimised for future software, not current performance. The A16 in the iPhone 15 is still overkill for what most people use a phone for in 2026. You’re not using 40% of what either chip can do.
Day Three: Battery Life
This one surprised me. The refurbished iPhone 15 had a battery health of 91%. The new iPhone 17 Pro Max, fresh out of the box, sits at 100%.
Logically, the new phone should win comfortably.
Over four days of identical use, the Pro Max lasted about 25 minutes longer on average before hitting 20%. That’s real, but it’s not transformative.
Both phones easily got through a full day. Neither needed a midday charge under normal conditions.
The takeaway here isn’t that battery health doesn’t matter. It absolutely does. A refurbished phone with 78% battery health is a different story entirely, and you should walk away from anything below 80%.
But a certified device with 88–92% battery health? You’ll barely notice the difference from new in real-world use.
Day Four: The Software Experience
Identical. Both phones run the same iOS. Both get the same updates on the same day. A refurbished iPhone 15 will receive iOS updates for years to come, on exactly the same schedule as a brand-new device.
The software doesn’t know or care what the phone cost or when it was first activated.
This is the same story on Android. A refurbished Pixel 8, 256GB gets the same seven years of Google updates as a new one.
Same security patches, same feature drops, same AI tools. The update schedule is tied to the model, not the buyer.
Day Five: The One Area Where New Wins
I’ll be fair. There are real differences, and I’d be doing you a disservice pretending there aren’t.
The things the $1,100 phone genuinely does better:
- Extreme zoom photography (5x vs 2x is a real gap if you use it)
- Sustained heavy workloads like long video renders or extended gaming sessions
- The absolute latest features (Action Button, Camera Control on the iPhone 17)
- ProRes video recording at 4K120fps if you’re a serious videographer
If any of those features are central to how you use your phone, the new flagship might actually be worth it. But be honest with yourself.
- How often do you actually use 5x zoom?
- When did you last render a video on your phone?
For most people, the honest answer to all of those is: rarely, never, and honestly not really.
The Number That Puts It All in Perspective
The average price gap between a new flagship and its certified refurbished equivalent is currently 37%. On the iPhone comparison I ran, that gap was $720.
That’s not nothing. That’s a weekend away, three months of a streaming service, or, if you’re buying for a teenager, essentially a free second phone.
The global refurbished phone market hit $34.8 billion in 2026. 310 million people bought refurbished in 2023 alone, nearly one in four smartphones sold that year and I reckon once more people become aware of what we’re talking about today, that figure will balloon some more.
What I’d Actually Recommend Buying
Based on this week of testing and everything I’ve handled over the past few years, here’s where the value genuinely sits right now:
- Best overall: Refurbished iPhone 15, 256GB, unlocked. This is the sweet spot. Brilliant camera, USB-C, years of iOS updates ahead of it, and significantly cheaper than the 16. This is the phone I’d tell my family to buy.
- Best budget iPhone: Refurbished iPhone 14, 256GB, unlocked. Still a capable daily driver in 2026. Not exciting, but completely solid.
- Best Android: Refurbished Pixel 9, 256GB, unlocked. Google’s seven-year update promise is the strongest software longevity commitment in Android right now. Outstanding camera, clean software, no bloat.
- Also worth a look: Refurbished Pixel 8, 256GB, unlocked. A step below the 9 but still a seriously capable phone at a lower price point.
- Hard avoids: iPhone 12 and older. Any carrier-locked device unless you’ve confirmed it works on your network. Anything with battery health below 80%.
Go 256GB minimum on storage across the board. The price difference between 128GB and 256GB at the refurbished tier is small. The regret of running out of space six months in is not.
Know Your Mobile Verdict
A $380 refurbished phone embarrassed a $1,100 new one in a blind test. That’s not a fluke or a trick of the framing. It’s just what the data looks like when you remove the marketing and run the actual comparison.
Buy certified, buy unlocked, check the battery health, and stop paying for a box and a cable.
Pro-Tip: The single best thing you can do before buying any refurbished phone is filter for battery health above 85% and confirmed unlocked status. Everything else is negotiable. Those two things are not. Get those right and you’re getting new-phone performance at a used-phone price, every time.
