Huawei is one step closer to bringing mobile network to the tube.
The wireless company hopes to have full mobile network operational on the London Underground by the 2012 Olympics, with the Central and Jubilee lines getting priority.
According to the Financial Times, contractor Thales will work with Huawei and all the mobile networks to integrate mobile network into the Underground system.
The entire system would cost more than £100 million, although the networks would take on the majority of the costs.
No other telecom companies have been put forward to help bring the tube up to date.
Huawei told the FT, “Due to business confidentiality, we are unable to comment on the project at this point, but I can confirm that we are involved in the bidding process. The UK is an important market for Huawei.”
If the plans do go ahead, work would begin in summer and must be completed by March.
