BBC iPlayer app coming to iPhone in February

Apple iOS devices will be getting a dedicated BBC iPlayer app next month

The BBC iPlayer App is set to launch this February on iPhone and iPad, twelve months after the original idea was put forward.

Aiming for a late February release, the app will grant users access to the BBC's repeat programming service without having to use their mobile's web browser. The iPlayer app will only be available in the UK and will offer shows for a week after they air, much in the same way as the non-app iPlayer.

Other details are sparse and there is speculation as to whether the BBC's cutbacks might affect the prospect of versions for Android and other operating systems. Certainly having the app confirmed first on iOS shows preference to Apple's devices but it would be interesting if the BBC did not develop for Android as there are probably more Android users overall spanning a variety of handsets.
