TL;DR
- Current watchOS 27 support: Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later.
- No watchOS 27: Series 6, 7 and 8, SE 2 and the original Ultra. They still work, but they won’t get watchOS 27’s features.
- Why support matters: Updates bring features, fixes and security protections. Older watches can also lose compatibility with newer apps and services over time.
- Why it doesn’t have to rule out an older watch: Losing the latest watchOS doesn’t make a watch stop working. It can still handle many everyday jobs, including workouts and activity tracking.
- Refurbished can save you a lot: A refurbished Apple Watch can get you a highly capable fitness tracker for far less than buying new. Compare models, support status and prices in our refurbished Apple Watch collection.
How long does Apple support Apple Watch?
Apple doesn’t promise a fixed number of years of watchOS updates for each Apple Watch. Support varies by model, and a watch’s release date alone doesn’t tell you exactly when it will stop getting the latest version.

The best way to check is to look at Apple’s current compatibility list.
As of October 2026:
- watchOS 27 supports Series 9 and later, SE 3, and Ultra 2 and later.
- Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, SE 2 and the original Ultra aren’t compatible with watchOS 27.
That’s a useful distinction when you’re shopping refurbished. A few years’ difference in release date can matter: Series 8 doesn’t make the current compatibility list, while Series 9 does. The original Ultra is also no longer on it, while Ultra 2 is.

Apple Watches That Support watchOS 27
You do not need the newest Apple Watch to run current software. These five models support watchOS 27, but the right choice depends on price, battery condition and the features you will actually use.
Apple Watch SE 3
- Software: Supports watchOS 27
- Best for: Everyday Apple Watch basics
- Main benefit: Lower purchase price
- Check: Which health features are missing
The SE 3 covers activity tracking, workouts, notifications and Apple Pay. It is the sensible choice if you want a current Apple Watch without paying for health features you may never use.
See Apple Watch SE 3 Deals →Apple Watch Series 9
- Software: Supports watchOS 27
- Best for: Spending less on a Series model
- Main benefit: Capable everyday performance
- Check: Price and battery condition
Series 9 remains a useful refurbished buy for tracking walks, recording workouts, checking activity rings and viewing notifications. It makes sense when it costs noticeably less than Series 10.
See Series 9 Deals →Apple Watch Series 10
- Software: Supports watchOS 27
- Best for: Most refurbished buyers
- Main benefit: Larger display and fast charging
- Check: Price gap against Series 11
Series 10 combines a thinner design, larger display and fast charging with current software support. It is the model most people should buy when the refurbished price sits comfortably below Series 11.
See Series 10 Deals →Apple Watch Series 11
- Software: Supports watchOS 27
- Best for: Newer hardware and longer ownership
- Main benefit: Longer rated battery life
- Check: Whether the premium is justified
Series 11 is the newer everyday option and has a longer rated battery life than Series 10. Buy it when the price difference is reasonable, not simply because it is the newer model.
See Series 11 Deals →Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Software: Supports watchOS 27
- Best for: Outdoor workouts and navigation
- Main benefit: Larger display and longer battery life
- Check: Whether the 49mm case suits you
Ultra 2 is built for people who will use its outdoor tools, larger display and longer rated battery life. It costs more and feels much larger on the wrist, so it is not automatically better for normal daily use.
See Ultra 2 Deals →Our recommendation: start with the Apple Watch Series 10. It offers the strongest mix of current software support, modern hardware and refurbished value. Drop to Series 9 to save more, or choose Ultra 2 only if its outdoor features and larger battery fit how you use a watch.
You don’t have to pay $1,000+ for a new phone. Buying refurbished saves you, on average, 40% to 50%.
Which means you skip the inflationary price hikes, side-step the 2026 memory cost crisis, and still get the flagship performance and specs you want.
Recommended Options For 2026What about Series 6, 7 and 8, SE 2 and the original Ultra?

TL;DR
- These models don’t support watchOS 27.
- They can still work for many everyday tasks.
- Buy only if the lower price makes sense for you and you’re comfortable with the older software position.
- Check whether the specific model still supports the apps and features you need.
Losing compatibility with the latest watchOS doesn’t switch off an Apple Watch. An unsupported model can still pair with an iPhone and continue to handle many basic tasks, such as showing the time, tracking activity and recording workouts.
What you miss is access to the latest watchOS release and its new features. Over time, app developers may also stop supporting older software, and some apps or services may require a newer watchOS version. Apple may issue updates for older software versions, but don’t assume an older watch will keep receiving security fixes indefinitely.
Series 8 and Series 7
Series 7 and Series 8 can still be tempting at a low price, particularly if you only want basic activity tracking and notifications. But neither supports watchOS 27. Series 8 is newer than Series 7, but both are outside the current major-update list.
Apple Watch SE 2
SE 2 is another lower-cost older option. It doesn’t support watchOS 27, so compare its price with SE 3 before buying. If the difference is small, the newer model’s current software support may be worth paying for.

Original Apple Watch Ultra
The original Ultra still has a large display, rugged titanium design and outdoor features, but it no longer supports watchOS 27. It can be a striking bargain if the price is low enough and you’re happy with its software cutoff. If you want a current Ultra model, compare it with Ultra 2.

Does an unsupported Apple Watch become unsafe?
It doesn’t become dangerous or stop working the moment it misses a major update. It does mean the watch won’t receive that version’s new features, and its software will fall further behind as newer versions arrive.
Security updates are separate from major feature updates, and Apple’s update history shows that older watchOS versions have sometimes received fixes.
But Apple doesn’t guarantee that every unsupported model will continue to receive patches. If you’re buying a watch for sensitive uses, such as payments and health data, a model still on the current compatibility list is the safer long-term choice.
For everyday activity tracking on a watch you already own, the decision is less dramatic. If it works with your iPhone and does what you need, there may be no urgent reason to replace it just because a new watchOS version has arrived.
