TL;DR: Refurbished Apple Watch Ultra 3 saves you a TON of money; Ultra 4 adds battery and health tracking
A refurbished Apple Watch Ultra 3 gets you 80% of the Ultra experience for way less cash. It starts at $534.98 which is significantly cheaper than a new Ultra 4 ($799) which is a difference of about $264.
My Take:
- Choose Ultra 4 if you want the longest battery life and new health features. Apple rates it for up to 50 hours of normal use, compared with 42 hours for Ultra 3. Ultra 4 also adds a Readiness score and more frequent heart-rate and heart-rate-variability readings.
- Both already have the big Ultra features: a 49mm titanium case, bright display, 5G, satellite functions, dual-frequency GPS, Action button and outdoor workout tools. Ultra 3 is still a very capable watch.
- For runs, gym sessions, steps and everyday use, Ultra 3 is likely enough. Ultra 4 makes more sense if you’ll use its extra battery, recovery data or long-workout modes.

What Actually Matters
- Price: Ultra 3 saves about $264 at these starting prices.
- Battery: Ultra 4 gives you more breathing room, especially on long days and during workouts.
- Chip: Ultra 3 is already quick for everyday watch tasks. Ultra 4’s newer chip matters more for its newer features.
- Health tracking: Ultra 4 makes more sense if you actively use recovery and training data.
- Display: The core screen specs are much the same, so the display isn’t a reason to pay more.
- Connectivity: Both have 5G and satellite features, so you’re getting the main connectivity benefits with either.
- Software: Both support watchOS 27. Apple doesn’t promise a fixed number of future updates.
- Workout battery: Ultra 4 is better suited to very long events, although its longest workout modes disable some features.
You don’t have to pay $1,000+ for a new phone. Buying refurbished saves you, on average, 40% to 50%.
Which means you skip the inflationary price hikes, side-step the 2026 memory cost crisis, and still get the flagship performance and specs you want.

Ultra 3 already has the headline hardware most people want from an Ultra: a large, bright screen, titanium case, Action button, dual-frequency GPS, 5G, satellite functions and Apple’s outdoor workout tools. It’s also compatible with watchOS 27, so buying one doesn’t mean settling for an unsupported model.
You don’t need to think about buying an Apple Watch in the same way you think about buying an iPhone. You use them for different things. You’re not interacting with your watch all day, every day.
Most of the time, it just sits on your wrist, tracking your exercise and your steps.
That’s basically what I use mine for.
I’d consider myself a pretty basic smartwatch user. I turn notifications off because I find them annoying as hell. I mostly want to track my workouts, my runs, my steps, and how much I’m exerting myself each day. For that, the Apple Watch is absolutely incredible.
I gravitate towards the Ultra models because they’re a bit bigger, and I think they look nicer. But there’s no way I’m paying the best part of £800 or $800 for a brand-new one when I can get an older model for basically half that.
I personally use the Apple Watch Ultra 2. I’ve had it for over six months now, and it’s been pretty much perfect. It tracks everything I need it to, the battery life is great, and I charge it every other day. It’s been a completely hassle-free addition to my daily routine.
It actually replaced my Garmin, which I found way too complicated. It felt like it was trying to do too much, and I didn’t want half the stuff it offered. I wanted to simplify my tracking and focus on the things I actually cared about.
The Ultra 2 does that for me. I put it on, get on with my day, and it tracks what I need without becoming another thing I have to spend time managing.
It’s also cheaper than the Ultra 3 and considerably cheaper than the Ultra 4, which makes it another great option if you want to save some money.
If you mainly need the basics of fitness tracking, but you like the bigger design of the Ultra models and want access to some of their more advanced features, the Ultra 2 still makes a lot of sense. Mine does everything I need it to. I don’t feel any need to pay more.
Conversely, if you want something a little newer for tracking runs, gym sessions, walks and steps, there’s little here that makes Ultra 3 feel out of date. It tracks workouts, gives you your pace and heart rate, and handles the usual watch jobs. If you charge it overnight, its 42-hour rating may already be more than you need.
Apple Watch Ultra 4: better for battery, recovery data and very long workouts

TL;DR: Pay extra for Ultra 4 if you’ll use its longer battery life, Readiness score or more detailed heart data.
- USP: Up to 50 hours of normal-use battery life, plus more frequent heart-rate and HRV readings.
- Best for: People who train seriously, want recovery guidance, or need to track long events without charging.
- Trade-off: It costs more, and the display and many everyday features are already present on Ultra 3.

Ultra 4’s health system is its main change. It takes background heart-rate readings more often, measures heart-rate variability more frequently and adds a Readiness score based on recent activity, sleep and health data. If you look at your recovery numbers when deciding whether to push hard or take an easier day, that could be useful.
The battery upgrade is also real: Apple rates Ultra 4 for up to 50 hours of normal use, compared with 42 for Ultra 3.
It can track up to 45 hours in Max Extended Workout mode, though that mode switches off alerts and splits and leaves some metrics unavailable. This is aimed at long endurance events, not someone doing a 30-minute run before work.
Ultra 4 also has the S11 chip. That powers its newer health features and Apple’s latest watch functions. For checking the time, tracking steps or starting a regular workout, the Ultra 3’s S10 chip is already more than capable.
Which Ultra upgrades will you actually notice?
Battery: useful if your days or workouts run long
The eight-hour increase in Apple’s normal-use rating gives Ultra 4 more room for long days, sleep tracking and workouts. Its 84-hour Low Power Mode rating is also 12 hours above Ultra 3’s.
But a rating is not a promise. GPS workouts, cellular connections, screen use and battery age affect actual runtime. If you charge your watch each night and don’t run long events, Ultra 3 may already cover you.
Health tracking: a real difference for data-minded users
Ultra 4’s Readiness score and more frequent heart and HRV readings give you more information about recovery. That may help if you already use heart-rate and sleep data to guide your training.
If you mainly want to record a run, see your pace, close your activity rings and check your steps, Ultra 3 does those jobs. Extra data is only useful if you’ll look at it and act on it.
Display and connectivity: Ultra 3 already has them
Ultra 4 and Ultra 3 have the same display area and peak brightness. Both offer 5G and satellite features, so these aren’t reasons to choose Ultra 4 over Ultra 3.
Satellite functions can be useful when you’re beyond mobile and Wi-Fi coverage, but they have requirements and regional limits. Check Apple’s current availability for where you live or travel.
Workout tracking: Ultra 4 is built for longer sessions
Both watches have GPS, heart-rate tracking and workout tools for running, hiking and other activities. Ultra 4’s longer extended-workout options matter most for endurance races and unusually long days outside.
For everyday runs, gym workouts and walks, Ultra 3 is already more watch than most people need. The newer model’s workout modes are a specialist advantage, not a basic fitness requirement.

| Want the newest model and plan to keep it for years | Ultra 4 | You get the newer chip and health system, though future software support is never guaranteed for a set number of years. |

Verdict: Ultra 3 is the value pick; Ultra 4 is for battery and health tracking

- The refurbished Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the sensible choice for most buyers looking for an Ultra watch without the massive price tag. It has the large bright screen, satellite functions, 5G and the workout tools people usually want from an Ultra, while costing about $264 less than a new Ultra 4.
- Go with the Apple Watch Ultra 4 if you’ll know you’ll take advantage of its extra battery, Readiness score, frequent heart readings or long workout modes. If you mainly want to track ordinary workouts, steps and sleep, Ultra 3 gives you plenty of watch for less.
You’re reading this because you want to know which offers better value: a brand-new Apple Watch Ultra 4 or a refurbished Ultra 3.
Regular readers will know I’m a big fan of refurbished tech. You get all the features and specs you need and want for a price that is much, much lower than buying new.
Of course, you need to ensure that it is properly refurbished but that’s where we come in: our vetted refurbished Apple Watch database ONLY includes refurbished products that meet the strictest criteria.
With something like the Apple Watch, buying refurbished makes a lot of sense to me. You don’t interact with it in the same way you do your phone. Buying the newest model just because it’s new doesn’t really add much to the experience.
The value comes from getting the features you actually want for much less money. And I think the refurbished Apple Watch Ultra 3 does this spectacularly.
It’s considerably cheaper than a brand-new Ultra 4, while giving you the core features most people are buying an Ultra for: the big display, satellite SOS, the bigger battery, and advanced fitness tracking.
For most people, that covers what they need.
If you’re going to make proper use of the Ultra 4’s newer, more specialist features, fair enough. Go with that one. There’s a reason to pay more if you’ll actually use what the extra money gets you.
But if you’re anything like me, doing runs, going to the gym, tracking your steps, and wanting something with a bit more pizzazz on your wrist, the refurbished Ultra 3 is the way to go.
You get the Ultra look, the features you’ll use, and more bang for your buck.
