The PS5 is now available to buy – if you can find one. Ever since its release, the PS5 has been plagued by stock issues, thanks to both COVID and the global chip shortage. Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Argos, and pretty much every other retailer does restock every now and then, but you have to act fast to get one – they don’t last long.
Sony has confirmed that it expects PS5 stock to improve in 2022, so as we move through 2022 units should become easier to find. Sony did not, however, give any specifics on dates and when it expects the supply of PS5 units to improve. It could be early 2022 or late 2022.
The PS5 – again, if you can find one – starts from $499 / £449 / AU$749.95; that’s pretty much exactly the same price as Microsoft’s Xbox Series X console. If you want a cheaper option, Sony offers a PS5 Digital Edition which starts from $399.99 / £359.99.
The PS5 got its official release date on November 12, 2020 – smack bang in the middle of the first wave of the COVID pandemic. The release of the new console was well received. Reviewers and critics alike loved the new console, its powerful new internals, and what it represented for the future.
The only downside was that actually buying a PS5 in 2020 and 2021 proved next to impossible. Supply shortages of key components – like its chipset – and the global turmoil caused by COVID meant that millions of potential buyers could not get their hands on a PS5.
This is the million-dollar question: when will the PS5 be back in stock? Amazon regularly secures itself units. Ditto Best Buy, Argos, and other brand box stores and retailers. But no sooner have new units arrive, they’re sold out, such is the demand for the PS5.
The good news is that Sony expects the situation to improve in 2022, so if you’re dying to get your hands on a PS5, 2022 could be the year it happens.
