iPhone 4 is NOT Getting iOS 8 Update

Apple iOS 8 will not support older models including the iPhone 4

Apple’s iOS 8 is expected for a reveal at WWDC 2014 next month, but news has emerged that not every Apple product will be eligible for the new software version.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise; every time Apple launches a new software build some of its older products have their support phased out. Macworld reports that iOS 8 will see the iPhone 4S and above upgrading to the new software, meaning the now long-in-the-tooth iPhone 4 will be stuck on iOS 7. Last year Apple phased out support for the original iPad and iPhone 3GS, so it is at least sticking to a consistent pattern.

Users still on iPhone 4 handsets may find this an inconvenience, but with reports of a cheaper 8GB iPhone 5S, a reduction in price of the iPhone 4S and the likely continued reduction of the iPhone 5C there are options to upgrade to an iOS 8 compatible device without splashing out on higher storage variants of the iPhone 5S or the forthcoming iPhone 6. As usual, Apple’s next crop of devices – the iPhone 6/Air, iPhone phablet, iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 will carry iOS 8 on launch. The iPod 5 will also support iOS 8.

The iPhone 4 is still a popular handset, though. Last year, Localytics published figures suggesting the iPhone 4 accounted for around 20% of Apple’s market share. Granted, a lot has happened since then and many users will have now upgraded, but the figures are still rather alarming – 20% of Apple’s user base is still a pretty hefty number.

“Apple has sold 500 million iPhones,” reports ZDNet, “of which 89 percent are running iOS 7. Not offering iOS 8 on the iPhone 4 will make it harder to keep that united front which could be a pain for developers. Of course, the iOS install base remains far, far more united than the very fragmented Android universe.”

Often this phasing out is due to new software features which rely on hardware older models do not have. It’s not clear what this could be for the new iOs 8 build, but there is talk of Apple launching a new software suite at WWDC which will allow users to control various home appliances, including lights and security hardware.

Its good that apple actually does an offer like that. No other phone companies that I know of do that. Hope they do the same when it is iPhone 4s's turn.

and Microsoft

Why Apple?
at least let us return to IOS6 :(

iPad 2 is getting iOS 8, but iPhone 4 isn't.

Is ipad 2 getting ios8 or not ?

It does.

This report is quite wrong. Ipad 2 totally gets ios8

Urghh! iPhone 4 is not iOS 8 supported.. NOOOOO!

With the new iPad Air 2 coming out I better sell my old iPad before the value of it drops. I usually search 10-13 different sites to find the best offer, but I just found this company that compares all the buyback companies in one spot. it’s called RecomHub.

It’s like Kayak but for Apple Devices that show you all the offers in one spot.

"Last year Apple phased out support for the original iPad and iPhone 3GS, so it is at least sticking to a consistent pattern."

iPad 1 got phased out when ios 6 launched; ios 5.1.1 was the last version compatible with the iPad 1. iPhone 3GS still got ios 6 in 2012 but got phased out when ios 7 launched

Don't hold your breath about iOS 9 for the 4S. I believe ios 8 would be the last major ios version since it's already had ios 5, 6, 7 already

Tell me Apple why you don't want to support iOS 8 on iPhone 4.
If you set new iOS 8 for iPhone 4, maybe more than 100 million iPhone 4 users would be happier because current iOS 7.1.1 totally destroys iPhone 4. Battery is faster discharging, internet is slower and sometimes my iPhone is automatically exits from applications. Please set the new iOS 8 for iPhone 4!!!!!!!!

Guess i'm getting a Iphone 5c

Well, if you're so bummed about iOS 8 not being available for iPhone 4, but you can get iOS 7, what do you like about iOS 6 better than 7 anyway? iOS 7.1.1 runs fine on the iPhone 4 by the way if you do a clean restore install (in my tests I have done).

I meant the offer of getting a newer iPhone for less money

wtf so we can get ios 7 so you can get rid of the iphone 1_2_3 and now you expect us to buy a new phone like if we had the first second or third

if you can you are lucky

Iphone 4s stops in the middle of an upgrade and is like dead

well, when my iPad 2 ran IOS6 it had superior performance to 7 and long battery life, after IOS7 (installed using a clean restore) the performance was bad and apps crashed alot (that problem was fixed in 7.1)

the battery life was bad in 7 and it got worse in 7.1

Plus, for many, the interface is easier to see, the text easier to read, etc. Some (many) may prefer the iOS 6 interface, too.

If you add in all the reports about iOS 7 hits to battery life on the iPhone 4, those are big reasons to NOT upgrade.

the plain white interface hurts the eyes
upgrading from 6 was the worst idea EVER
