What Should You Upgrade To From An iPhone 13?
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the best option if money is no object. For most iPhone 13 owners, however, a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max is the smarter upgrade.
Our recommendation: the refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max is the sweet spot. It feels like a major upgrade from the iPhone 13 without forcing you to pay current flagship prices.

Your phone is old enough that an upgrade will feel like an actual upgrade, but not so old that you need to panic-buy the newest thing Apple sells. The iPhone 13 is still usable. It still runs modern iOS. It still takes good photos. For most normal stuff, social, email, browsing, banking, photos, video, it’s fine.
But battery life is usually where this generation starts to fall apart. The camera feels older. The screen isn’t as nice as newer models. And if you’ve had it since launch, there’s a decent chance the battery health is now doing that annoying thing where it looks fine at 11am and then somehow turns into a problem by 4pm.
So what’s the best upgrade from an iPhone 13?
For most people, I’d split it into four options:
- Best high-end upgrade: iPhone 18 Pro Max
- Best value upgrade: Refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max
- Best cheaper Apple upgrade: Refurbished iPhone 16
- Best Android upgrade: Galaxy S26 Ultra or Pixel 11 Pro
And no, you don’t automatically need the newest iPhone.
That’s usually the wrong way to think about it.
Option 1: iPhone 18 Pro Max, The High-End Choice

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the obvious choice if you want the biggest, best, newest iPhone Apple makes.
Coming from an iPhone 13, it will feel like a serious jump. You’re getting a much better display, better cameras, faster performance, stronger battery life, newer software features, and a more premium overall design.
This is the upgrade for people who want the full Apple flagship experience and don’t mind paying for it.
The thing is, you are paying for it.
And that’s the bit worth thinking about.
The iPhone 13 is not some ancient phone that can’t open Instagram anymore. It’s still quick enough for most people. So if you’re moving to an iPhone 18 Pro Max, you’re not doing it because your iPhone 13 is completely useless. You’re doing it because you want the best version of the iPhone experience.
That’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with that.
Just don’t kid yourself that you need it.
Most people don’t use their phones hard enough to justify buying the newest Pro Max every time. They browse, message, scroll, take photos, watch videos, use maps, check email, and maybe edit the odd short video. A recent refurbished flagship does all of that brilliantly.
So, should you buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max?
Yes, if you want the best iPhone and you’re happy paying full price.
No, if you’re trying to make the smartest money decision.
Option 2: Refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max, The Best Value Upgrade

This is the one I’d recommend to most iPhone 13 owners. Why? Because I was running an iPhone 13 until I switched over to a refurb iPhone 15 Pro Max earlier this year.
A refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max gives you the proper flagship upgrade without going all-in on the newest model.
Compared to the iPhone 13, it’s a big jump where it actually matters:
- Bigger and better display
- 120Hz ProMotion
- Better cameras
- Better low-light photography
- Better video
- Stronger battery life
- USB-C
- Dynamic Island
- More premium build
- Longer practical lifespan from today
That’s a proper upgrade. Not a tiny benchmark improvement you’ll never notice. A real, day-to-day upgrade.
The display alone makes a big difference. Once you’ve used a larger Pro Max screen with ProMotion, going back to a standard iPhone 13 display feels a bit dull. Not unusable. Just older.
The camera system is also a much bigger deal than the processor bump. People obsess over chips, but most normal users don’t feel the difference between one fast iPhone chip and another fast iPhone chip. You do notice better zoom. You do notice better low-light shots. You do notice better battery life.
That’s why the iPhone 15 Pro Max makes so much sense.
It’s new enough to feel modern, old enough to be much cheaper refurbished, and powerful enough that you won’t be thinking about upgrading again in a year.
That’s the sweet spot.

Compare 900+ refurbished phones →Option 3: Refurbished iPhone 16, The Cheaper Modern iPhone Upgrade
If you don’t want a massive phone and you don’t care about having the Pro Max model, the refurbished iPhone 16 is probably the cleaner upgrade.
It’s newer than the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but it sits in a different lane.
This is the option for people who want a modern iPhone, newer hardware, better efficiency, Apple’s newer feature set, and a familiar size, without paying Pro Max money.
Coming from an iPhone 13, the iPhone 16 gives you a newer design, better performance, better cameras, USB-C, and a longer runway for future iOS updates.
It’s also easier to live with if you don’t want a massive phone in your pocket.
That matters more than people admit. The Pro Max models are brilliant, but they are big. If you use your phone one-handed a lot, or you just prefer something more manageable, the iPhone 16 is a better fit.
The trade-off is simple: you don’t get the full Pro Max camera system, the huge screen, or the same flagship feel as the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
But you do get a very modern iPhone for less money.
For a lot of people, that’s enough.
Option 4: Galaxy S26 Ultra Or Pixel 11, The Best Android Upgrades

If you’re upgrading from an iPhone 13 and you’re open to Android, the two obvious choices are the Galaxy S26 Ultra and Pixel 11.
They’re very different phones.
The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the one to look at if you want the big-screen, do-everything Android flagship. It’s the Android version of going for the biggest Pro Max iPhone, only with Samsung’s extra features, display settings, camera modes, multitasking tools, and S Pen support if that matters to you.
It’s the power-user option.
The Pixel 11 is the one to look at if you want Android without feeling like you’ve bought a phone that needs three days of setup before it feels normal.
That’s why Pixels make sense for iPhone users.
The software is cleaner. The camera experience is simple. The phone does a lot of the clever stuff in the background without making you think about it too much. If you want to move away from Apple but don’t want Android to feel like homework, the Pixel 11 is probably the safer bet.
Samsung gives you more.
Pixel gives you less friction.
That’s basically the choice.
If you want the best refurbished Android value right now, it’s also worth looking at recent models like the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Pixel 9 Pro XL, because those are exactly the kind of phones that become much more interesting once the price drops.
Which iPhone Should You Upgrade To?
All three phones will feel substantially better than an iPhone 13. The right choice depends on whether you want the best Apple makes, the strongest value or the lowest sensible price.
iPhone 18 Pro Max
Buy it if you want the best iPhone and plan to keep it for years. It will be a massive upgrade from the iPhone 13, but it is also the most expensive route. The price becomes easier to justify if you intend to use it for four or five years.
- Apple’s newest flagship hardware
- Best choice for long-term ownership
- Largest upfront cost
Refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max
This is the best overall upgrade for most iPhone 13 owners. It is a big enough jump to feel immediately different, but old enough for refurbished prices to make sense. You do not need the newest Pro Max to get a proper flagship upgrade.
- Larger ProMotion display
- Flagship camera system
- Better battery life and USB-C
- Much cheaper than a new Pro Max
Refurbished iPhone 16
Buy it if you want something newer without paying Pro Max money. It does not feel as premium or camera-focused as the 15 Pro Max, but it is more than enough for messaging, photos, social media, video, banking, maps and everyday browsing.
- Newer mainstream hardware
- Familiar standard-size design
- Lower price than either Pro Max
The short answer: buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want the absolute best. Buy the refurbished iPhone 16 if keeping costs down matters most. For the best balance of price, features and noticeable improvement, get the refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Final Recommendation

The best upgrade from an iPhone 13 is the refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max.
That’s the one I’d buy.
- It gives you the biggest real-world jump without forcing you into the latest iPhone pricing.
- You get the better screen, better cameras, better battery life, USB-C, and the full Pro Max experience.
- And it costs less than the price of a new base model iPhone which is insane.
If you want the best possible iPhone and money isn’t the issue, get the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
If you want a cheaper modern iPhone, get the refurbished iPhone 16.
If you want to leave Apple:
- Go Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want the big, feature-packed Android flagship
- Or Pixel 11 if you want the cleaner, easier Android option.
