Early-Testers: iPhone Ultra is Great. Camera? Not So Much…

Apple’s folding iPhone is reportedly winning over the small number of people who have actually used it.

• They like the way it fits in a pocket.
• They like the hinge, which apparently feels solid and durable.
• They also like the iPad-style app layouts that appear when its 7.8-inch display opens.

But there is one fairly large catch: the camera system isn’t expected to match the cheaper iPhone 18 Pro Max.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the iPhone Ultra will use two rear cameras rather than Apple’s full three-camera Pro setup. It reportedly gets a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultrawide, but no dedicated telephoto lens.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max, meanwhile, is expected to have three 48MP rear cameras, a new variable-aperture main sensor and a periscope-style telephoto capable of much longer optical zoom.

That is a strange compromise on a phone expected to cost at least $2,000, and possibly closer to $2,500 with more storage.

iPhone Ultra vs iPhone 18 Pro Max Camera Specs

The specifications above come from current leaks and may change before Apple announces the phones.

The Missing Telephoto Lens Is The Big Difference

Megapixels are not the problem here.

The iPhone Ultra’s two rear cameras are both expected to use 48MP sensors. Its main camera should handle regular photos, portraits, night shots and video, while the ultrawide covers group photos, buildings, interiors and macro-style close-ups.

That is enough for most everyday photography.

What it cannot replace is a dedicated telephoto lens.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to retain Apple’s periscope-style telephoto system. One recent report says it could offer 6x optical zoom using a more advanced five-refraction prism, although earlier information pointed to a range between 5x and 6x.

The exact magnification remains unsettled. The important bit is that the Pro Max will have a separate camera built specifically for distant subjects. The Ultra apparently will not.

That matters when photographing:

• Children or pets without getting directly in their faces
• Performers from the back of a concert venue
• Players from the edge of a football pitch
• Wildlife that will not let you walk closer
• Architectural details high above street level
• Portraits with a more natural, flattering perspective
• Travel scenes where moving closer is impossible

The Ultra may still provide a 2x option by cropping into the centre of its 48MP main sensor. Apple already markets this as an optical-quality telephoto mode on single-camera iPhones.

It works well in decent light, but it is not the same as having a proper long-range lens. Push beyond 2x and the phone increasingly relies on digital enlargement, processing and sharpening. Fine detail drops, noise becomes more obvious and results become less dependable in poor light.

The Pro Max should be able to move from ultrawide through 1x, 2x and its dedicated long-range telephoto without asking one camera to fake the entire range.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max Could Get A Better Main Camera Too

The telephoto isn’t the only expected difference.

Leaked files from Apple supplier Tata Electronics reportedly reference a new Sony IMX905 main sensor for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The sensor is linked to variable-aperture hardware, something Apple has never used on an iPhone.

Current iPhone cameras use a fixed opening. The lens lets in the same physical amount of light, while exposure is controlled through shutter speed, sensor sensitivity and computational processing.

A variable aperture can physically widen or narrow that opening.

In darker conditions, the camera can open wider to collect more light. In strong daylight, it can narrow the opening, reducing the amount of light before it reaches the sensor.

In practical terms, that could give the Pro Max:

• Better control of bright highlights
• More natural motion blur when recording video outdoors
• Sharper detail across some well-lit scenes
• Greater control over depth of field
• More natural background separation at close distances
• Less dependence on software-generated blur

We do not yet know whether Apple will provide manual aperture controls or handle everything automatically. It is also unclear how dramatic the still-photo difference will be given the relatively small size of smartphone sensors.

But it is still camera hardware the Ultra is not currently expected to receive.

There are conflicting reports over whether the smaller iPhone 18 Pro will also get variable aperture. The leaked supplier file specifically identified the Pro Max, making that model the safer choice if you want every new camera feature Apple has planned.

The Pro Max Telephoto May Work Better In Poor Light

Long-range phone cameras have traditionally struggled after dark because their smaller lenses and sensors capture less light than the main camera.

Apple is reportedly working on that too.

Leaks have linked the iPhone 18 Pro Max with a wider-aperture telephoto lens as well as longer optical reach. A wider opening would help the zoom camera collect more light, improving photos at indoor events, evening concerts and dimly lit venues.

This is important because current phones sometimes switch back to a digitally cropped main camera when the telephoto does not have enough light. The result may look acceptable on the phone screen but fall apart when you zoom in later.

A brighter telephoto would allow the Pro Max to use its actual zoom hardware in more conditions.

The Ultra does not have that option. Once you move beyond its main sensor’s usable crop, it has no longer focal-length lens to fall back on.

The iPhone Ultra Does Have One Genuine Camera Advantage

The Ultra’s cameras may be weaker, but taking pictures with it could feel better.

Gurman’s sources reportedly praised the foldable as a camera viewfinder. Open the phone and you get a roughly 7.8-inch internal display, considerably larger than the 6.9-inch panel expected on the Pro Max.

That gives you more room to:

• Check focus before taking the picture
• Inspect faces in group shots
• See small details around the edges of the frame
• Review exposure and colour more easily
• Frame video with a clearer view of the scene
• Show photos and clips to somebody immediately after shooting

The almost-square inner display could be particularly useful for composing 4:3 photos. A normal widescreen phone leaves more unused space around a standard photo preview, while the Ultra’s internal proportions should fit still photography more naturally.

The hinge may also let the phone hold itself partly open on a flat surface. That could be useful for group photos, time-lapses and video calls without carrying a tripod, although Apple has not yet explained whether its Camera app will include a dedicated half-folded interface.

So yes, the Ultra may provide the better screen for composing and reviewing a photograph.

The Pro Max should still capture the wider range of photographs.

What About Selfies And Video Calls?

The Ultra is expected to need two front-facing cameras because it has two displays: one camera for use while closed and another for the internal screen.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max only needs one front-facing camera, with Apple’s newer Center Stage system expected to return.

Exact Ultra selfie specifications remain unclear. Adding two cameras inside a body measuring around 4.5mm thick when unfolded creates the same space problem responsible for the loss of Face ID.

The folding design could still create interesting options. A large internal display is well suited to video calls, while the hinge could keep the phone upright on a desk. Apple could also use the outer screen as a preview while taking a selfie with the better rear cameras, as rival foldables already do.

That last feature would make sense, but it has not been confirmed. Do not treat it as settled until Apple shows the software.

For conventional front-camera photography, the Pro Max is the safer known quantity. For hands-free calls and unusual shooting positions, the Ultra’s shape may prove more useful.

Why Would A $2,500 iPhone Have Fewer Cameras?

Because Apple cannot fit everything inside it.

The iPhone Ultra is expected to measure roughly 4.5mm thick when opened. Each half has to contain part of the battery, display hardware, logic board, cooling components, speakers, cameras and hinge structure.

Periscope telephoto cameras take up a surprising amount of internal room because light has to travel sideways through several lens elements and prisms. Apple could make the Ultra thicker, but that would make it extremely bulky when folded shut, and Apple detests anything that might be described as a little bit on the chunky side.

The company appears to have chosen thinness and pocketability over a complete Pro camera system.

That is understandable from an engineering point of view. It is harder to accept from a pricing point of view.

The Ultra is expected to sit above the iPhone 18 Pro Max in Apple’s range and cost hundreds of dollars more. Buyers generally expect the most expensive model to contain the best hardware Apple makes, not the best hardware Apple could squeeze into a very thin folding shell.

You are paying for the hinge and folding display, and its iPad-like multitasking capabilities, not for the best iPhone camera.

Which One Should You Buy For Photography?

Buy The iPhone 18 Pro Max If…

• You regularly use optical zoom
• You photograph concerts, sport, wildlife, children or pets
• You want Apple’s most complete camera system
• You shoot lots of video outdoors
• You want the rumoured variable-aperture main camera
• You take photos in poor light at longer zoom ranges
• Camera hardware matters more than having a folding screen

For most serious phone photographers, this is the clear choice.

Buy The iPhone Ultra If…

• Most of your photos are taken at 0.5x, 1x or 2x
• You care more about the folding display than long-range zoom
• You want a larger screen for framing and reviewing shots
• You like the idea of using the hinge for hands-free photos and calls
• You are happy accepting weaker camera hardware to get Apple’s first foldable

The Ultra’s cameras should still be very good. They just will not be as flexible as the Pro Max system.

“Ultra” Does Not Mean Best At Everything

This is the distinction Apple will need to communicate carefully.

The iPhone Ultra is not shaping up as an iPhone 18 Pro Max with a folding screen attached. It is a different type of device with a different set of priorities.

Its headline features are the compact folded shape, large internal display, iPad-style software and hinge. To make that possible, Apple has reportedly removed the dedicated telephoto camera and Face ID.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max remains the more conventional camera-first flagship. It should offer the better camera range, stronger zoom and potentially the only variable-aperture main camera in the line.

I can understand the engineering decision. I am less convinced buyers will happily spend $2,500 on a phone that loses one of the most useful parts of Apple’s Pro camera system.

If you take lots of pictures, buy the Pro Max. If you want the folding screen and can live at 0.5x, 1x and 2x most of the time, the Ultra may still make sense.

Just do not buy the most expensive iPhone assuming it automatically has Apple’s best camera. Based on the leaks we have now, it probably will not.
