Change the navigation key shortcuts

Chris Leonard

The Motorola RAZR V3i's navigation keys can act as shortcuts to your network provider's own services, or different functions on the phone. But they can be easily changed.

The navigation keys on the Motorola V3i are the four small arrows on the large circular button at the top of the keypad. The middle button can either act as a Menu button or if your phone is provided by an operator, it will take you to their mobile Internet site. The four direction buttons around it will change according to the network that supplied your phone.

On a default setting, the direction buttons are Mobile Browser (Left), Bluetooth setup (Up), Games & Apps (Right), and Ring Styles (Down).

All of these functions can be changed to suit your preferences and most used features:

  • From the Standby screen, press Menu (The [–] button).
  • Highlight Settings and press Select (Figure 1).
  • Select Personalise (Figure 2) and then Home Screen (Figure 3).
  • Then select Home Keys (Figure 4).
  • You will see a list of buttons that you can change (Figure 5), including the Up/Down/Left/Right direction buttons, the Left and Right Soft Keys (Situated under the screen) and the Smart Key (A single button on the right-hand side of the screen).
  • To change these buttons’ functions, scroll down to the one you want to change and press Change (Figure 6).
  • Then scroll down to the shortcut you want for that button and press Select.

You can also choose shortcuts to items on your Menu screen so that instead of scrolling around the icons, you can simply press a number button on your keypad. To choose shortcuts:

  • Highlight the icon for the shortcut you want to assign (e.g. Messages, Phonebook, Games & Apps) (Figure 7).
  • Hold down the Menu key (The [–] button). A window will appear: Assign Shortcut for: “[icon selected]”. Press Yes (Figure 8).
  • You can then change the name of the icon and assign a numberpad button for that icon (Figure 9).
