Connecting to the Internet on the W850i

Use your W850i to access internet pages using the integrated WAP browser or send and receive email and MMS messages using GPRS connectivity

The Sony Ericsson W850i is equipped with G3, GPRS and EDGE technology to provide enhanced data rates mainly used for faster web browsing. Most current phone contracts now support GPRS data transfer, although you may well be required to pay data fees per MB transferred. If you’re unsure whether your contract includes GPRS data transfer, or if you want to find out about data fees, contact your network provider.

Setting up an Internet profile

Many phones bought on contract will come with Internet settings already set up but if not, it is very easy to set it up and get online. To do so you will need get the following information from your network provider:

APN address – this will vary between network providers and type of contract (pay monthly or PAYG)

Username – Usually something very simple, but differs between network providers.

Password – Usually something very simple, but differs between network providers.

Proxy address – a set of four numbers, each up to three digits in length and separated by full stops.

Port number – normally a four digit number starting with 8 or 9.

Once you have this information, that’s all you need to set up your internet access. Here’s how to do it:

Press the middle button to enter the main menu. Highlight the Settings icon then press Select (Figure 1). Scroll right four times through the tabbed menus until you reach the Connectivity section. Scroll down until you reach Data communication and press Select.

Here we’ll make sure your phone is set to use GPRS correctly for better internet access. Scroll down to Preferred service and press Select. Highlight PS and CS and press Select.

Now press Back to take you to the Connectivity menu and scroll down once to highlight Internet settings and press Select (Figure 2). Highlight Internet profiles and press Select (Figure 3), then scroll up to highlight New profile and press Add (Figure 4). Now you’re ready to enter the information you found out earlier.

  • Press Add and enter a name for your internet profile; for example type in ‘Internet’ and press OK (Figure 5).
  • Scroll down and highlight Connect using and press Select (Figure 6), then you can either pick out your type of contract, or you can enter it manually – it doesn’t take any longer to do it this way. Highlight New account and press Select, then highlight PS data and press Select (Figure 7).
  • Enter a name for your account type, for example enter ‘Vodafone’ and press Continue (Figure 8).
  • You’ll be presented with a new menu. Highlight APN: and press Edit, then enter the APN address you found out from your network provider (Figure 9).
  • Then scroll down to Username: and press edit, enter your network provider’s username and press OK. Now do the same with the password (Figure 10).
  • When you’ve finished, press Save.
  • We’re not quite finished yet though; you’ll need to scroll down to the internet profile you just saved (we called it ‘Internet’). Highlight this and press More, then press Select to enter Settings.
  • Highlight Use proxy: and press Select, then select yes and press Select (Figure 11).
  • Scroll down once to Proxy address: and press Select. Then enter the proxy address given to you by your network provider and OK (Figure 12).
  • Scroll down once more to highlight Port number: and press Select, then enter the four digit port number and press OK.
  • You’re almost done, so press Save to return to return to the Internet profiles menu. Finally you need to make sure your phone is set to use your newly created account, so highlight it (we called it ‘Internet’) and press Select.

Now you’re ready to go. To start up your WAP browser press back until you reach the main menu and select the browser icon (Figure 13), it looks like a globe with an arrow pointing towards it. Press Select to start browsing.
