How to use the Sony Ericsson K800i's camera

Tips and tricks on how to get the most out of the Sony Ericsson K800i's 3.2 megapixel camera

The K800i has a 3.2-megapixel stills and video camera, making it one of the best on the market. Its unique Cyber-Shot technology lets you take pictures, save them or even upload them to your blog with only a handful of key presses.
To turn on the camera, either slide down the lens cover on the back of the camera, or on the Menu screen select Cyber-Shot (Figure 1). The camera screen is now viewed in landscape (Widescreen mode) and now acts as a viewfinder.
On the top (what was the right-hand side of the phone) are two buttons: the Camera Button (the silver button) takes photos; the zoom in/out button (the black ones) are self-explanatory.
Using the camera
With the viewfinder on and the lens cover open, you are ready to take your shot using the silver camera button. Before you do so, you can take a few seconds to set up the picture for the best possible quality.
Press Settings to enhance your picture or video:
- Switch To Video Camera/ Switch To Still Camera (Figure 2).
- Shoot Mode (Camera) (Figure 3) – Normal, BestPic (select your favourite from nine pictures taken with one click), Panorama (join several pictures into one), Frames (places clipart frames around the picture).
- Shoot Mode (Video) (Figure 4) – Either For Picture Message (low quality) or High Quality Video.
- Scenes (Camera only) (Figure 5) – Auto, Twilight Landscape/ Portrait (for night shots), Landscape, Portrait, Beach/Snow (for bright environments), Sports (For fast-moving objects), Document (e.g. for text or pictures).
- Picture Size (Camera only) (Figure 5) – 3MP (2048x1536 pixels), 2MP (1632x1224), 1MP (1280x960), VGA (640x480).
- Focus – (Figure 6) Either Auto, Macro (For close-ups), Infinite (Scenery).
- Flash (Camera only) – Either Off, Auto or Red-eye Reduction.
- Turn On Night Mode (Video only) – Adapts to poor light conditions.
- Turn On Self-Timer (Camera only) (Figure 7).
- Effects – (Figure 8) Either Off, Black&White, Negative, Sepia, Solarize.
- White Balance – (Figure 9) Select colours suitable for lighting conditions.
- Metering Mode – Adjust exposure to whole or centre of image.
- Picture Quality (Camera only) (Figure 10) – Either Normal or Fine.
- Turn Off Mic (Video only) – Set microphone
- Shutter Sound (Camera only) – Select shutter sound.
- Turn On Time & Date (Camera only) – Add text to picture.
- Reset File No. – Reset file number counter.
- Save To – (Figure 11) Select where to save picture or video to. Either Memory Stick or Phone Memory.
When using the camera, you can also use a selection of shortcut buttons:
- Upper [-] button – Scenes (Video) or Turn On Night Mode (video).
- Lower [-] button – Shoot Mode.
- [1] button – Picture Size.
- [4] button – Focus.
- [0 ] button – Camera Key Guide.
- [*a/A] button – Flash.
