How Long Will a Refurbished iPhone Last? 2026 iOS Support Roadmap

Written by
Here’s a simple breakdown of how some of the most popular refurbished iPhones will be supported with iOS updates.
What We Recommend Right Now

I use my phone for work; things like still photography and video. For this reason, I always tend to use a Pro Max model. But I never buy them new; I always buy older models refurbished because it is WAY cheaper.
My current daily-driver is a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max which I bought in 2025 and I consider it very much the sweet spot for performance and long-term support.
If your budget is tight, go for a refurbished iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Plus (for more battery life and a larger screen). They offer the best price-per-year-of-life ratio currently available on the market.
If you need or want higher-end performance and camera tech, go with either:
- iPhone 14 Pro Max (the value sweet spot right now)
- iPhone 15 Pro Max (slightly more; totally worth the extra).
Why Support (iOS Updates, Security Updates) Matters When It Comes To iPhones
Why does this matter? Because some refurbished deals might look great but they’re cheap for a reason:
- The most common being they’re about to hit their end-of-life status which means no more iOS updates.
- Another could be the storage; if it’s a 64GB model you’ll want to avoid. These are no longer fit for purpose.
When a refurbished iPhone stops receiving updates, it doesn’t “die” immediately, but it begins a downward spiral in three critical areas:
Performance: The “AI Gap”
The 2026 software landscape is dominated by on-device AI. iOS 26 features like Adaptive Power Mode and Live Translation rely on the Neural Engines found in the A15 chip and newer.
Older models without these updates won’t just miss features; they will struggle to run modern, AI-heavy apps, leading to excessive battery drain and lag.
If you want to use AI and machine learning features on your phone, either for work, productivity or just because you like them, you’ll need to go with a more modern phone.
Apple’s support is brilliant too, so if you get something from the iPhone 14 or iPhone 15 series and up you’ll be supported well into the 2030s.
For AI specifically, you’ll need to go with the iPhone 15 Pro Max as the absolute minimum. The iPhone 16 series โ Apple’s iPhone 16e is now available at discounted refurbished prices โ and later series all support Apple Intelligence natively.
Security: The “Digital Front Door”
Security updates patch “Zero-Day” vulnerabilities which are flaws that hackers use to access photos or steal passwords.
You store A LOT of personal data on your phone which means it is super important to run the latest security patches and updates.
Without them, bad actors and hackers can get inside your phone and steal all of your personal data and money.
In 2026, Apple has introduced Background Security Improvements in iOS 26, allowing them to patch your phone instantly without a full reboot.
Background Security Improvements delivers lightweight security releases for components such as the Safari browser, WebKit framework stack and other system libraries that benefit from smaller, ongoing security patches between software updates.
In rare instances of compatibility issues, Background Security Improvements may be temporarily removed and then enhanced in a subsequent software update.
If you buy a phone that is “End of Life” (like the iPhone 11), you miss these silent shields, leaving your personal data exposed to modern exploits.
App Compatibility
The “Banking Cliff” This is where users feel the most pain. Banking, Finance, and Work apps (like Slack or Teams) usually require an iOS version no more than 2-3 years old.
By late 2026, many major financial institutions will drop support for iOS 16 and 17. If your refurbished iPhone can’t upgrade to iOS 26, you may find yourself locked out of your bank account by 2027.
Case in point: I have the original iPad from way back in 2010. It still switches on and works fine. But it cannot run any apps. It’ll handle the core Apple applications but that’s literally it. No third-party apps (even things like Netflix and IMDB) no longer work on it.
