iD Mobile Roaming & Usage Limits: Real-World Test & Results

Three Roaming Charges 2023

TL;DR – What We Learned From Using iD Mobile Abroad

We took iD Mobile on a two-week family holiday across Finland and Spain to see how well it holds up for real-world travel. We used our regular UK allowance to stream Netflix, share hotspots, make calls, and stay in touch, all without paying a penny more.

It worked like it does at home. No SIM swaps, no roaming add-ons, no surprise charges.

  • ✅ Works perfectly in 50+ EU countries
  • ❌ No service in Turkey, USA, Morocco, or outside Europe
  • ✅ Same data, texts, and calls as your UK plan
  • ⚠️ Fair use policy applies – don’t go over your limit
  • ❌ No global add-ons or one-off roaming passes

What It’s Like Using iD Mobile Abroad (Finland & Spain Test)

Finnish trains are AMAZING…

We spent one week in Finland visiting my partner’s family, then flew to Barcelona for a few days in the sun with the kids.

I had my iD Mobile SIM in my main phone (the 60GB, 8 quid a month plan) the entire time. No SIM switching, no roaming charges, just a normal UK plan that kept working across borders.

In Finland:

  • Connected instantly to Elisa’s local 4G network
  • Speeds were great: I hit 30–50Mbps consistently
  • I used my phone for Maps, Spotify, WhatsApp, and the odd YouTube binge without issue
  • The app kept updating my usage in real-time, so I could track how close I was to my roaming data cap

In Spain:

  • Hooked into Movistar and Vodafone networks
  • Even in more rural spots outside Barcelona, I had usable 4G
  • I turned on my hotspot at the airport and the kids streamed CBeebies on their tablets—worked flawlessly
  • Did Zoom calls and uploaded photos to Google Drive with no noticeable lag

Does iD Mobile Charge Extra Abroad?

Not in the EU. As long as you’re within your UK allowance and in a supported EU country, roaming is included at no extra cost.

That means if you’ve got a 60GB plan, you can use that data across the EU without worrying about extra fees.

We did hit a speed cap a few times during peak hours in rural Italy, but that felt more like local network congestion than anything specific to iD Mobile.

Are There Roaming Usage Limits?

Yes – but they’re reasonable. iD Mobile enforces fair usage policies to prevent abuse:

  • Don’t exceed your UK allowance
  • Don’t permanently roam (i.e., using it as your full-time SIM abroad)
  • Expect restrictions or alerts if you’re gone for several months

In our two-week trip, we didn’t trigger any warnings. We streamed Spotify, uploaded to Instagram, used Google Maps daily, and even tethered a laptop.

Can I Use iD Mobile in the USA or Turkey?

No. This is the one big drawback. Once we landed in Istanbul, the iD Mobile SIM went dead. Same story in New York a few months earlier.

There’s no global roaming; no bolt-ons to unlock it; no pay-as-you-go fallback. If you’re heading outside Europe, bring a backup:

  • Local SIM or eSIM
  • Travel SIM like Airalo or Holafly
  • Use Wi-Fi and apps like WhatsApp

Is iD Mobile Good for Travellers?

If your travel is mostly Europe-based, iD Mobile is a bargain. You get UK-level service and no added roaming costs. It’s excellent for short breaks, summer holidays, or EU work trips.

But if you’re a digital nomad, travel internationally, or visit the US regularly, you’ll hit a hard wall.
