Windows Phone 7’s integration with Xbox Live threatens to make the platform the most impressive mobile gaming solution in the technology industry.
Why? With powerful processors, capacitive high-res, bright screens and in some cases, graphics processors, they make the perfect gaming companions.
We take a look at some of the launch games available on Windows Phone 7.
Xbox Live games
Max and the Magic Marker
Max and the Magic Marker has been ported from Windows, Mac and Wii.
The game is a physics-based 2D puzzle platformer, where you control Max and his Magic Marker.
Whatever you draw will come to life and can be used by Max to use on his travels.
Flight Control has already made its mark in the smartphone world, available on iPhone and Android. The casual game involves landing coloured planes in a virtual airfield on their corresponding landing pads. The aim of the game is to land as many planes as possible, avoiding collisions.
Game Chest is a whole collection of card and board games to keep you entertained whatever your mode.
Including classics such as checkers, backgammon, and Chinese checkers, you can play against your friends online using Xbox Live and win achievements.
Games on the go
Guitar Hero 5
Glu Mobile’s Guitar Hero 5 comes to Windows Phone 7 and brings with it the ability to play a range of instruments including drums, guitar and bass.
20 songs will come preloaded, and if it’s anything like the iPhone version, you’ll be able to buy more within the app too.
Bubble Town 2
Bubble Town 2 is a revamped classic mobile game from I-play. You travel through 45 different worlds, based on land, in space and in the sea.
Your mission is to pop three or more of the same coloured orbs. Bubble Town 2 introduces lob shot, invasion mode and new power-ups.
Bejeweled Live is a puzzle game where you have to match the colours and shapes of gems to win.
The gems disappear as you match three or more, or if cascades are formed.
Geodefense is a classic colourful tower defense game, where glowing vectors swirl and slide around you.
It’s a fast-paced game with loads of levels to keep you entertained for hours.
OMG is a top scroller shoot’em up game for Windows Phone 7. It takes some elements of the bright neon lights featured in GeoDefense and puts this together with plenty of gunfire. You can choose between infinite mode, where you continue until you get bored, and 5-minute mode that’s time-limited.
Toy Story Mania
Toy Story Mania follows the CGI film and is a collection of games, starring all the characters such as Buzz, Woody and Mr. Potato Head. It’s loosely based on the Toy Story Mania theme park attraction, although the 3D effects don’t require you to wear special glasses here.
Ilomilo is a cute puzzle game where you have to attempt to reunite Ilo and Milo through a number of platform levels. You can switch between characters and solve challenges using blocks, switches and levers.
Puzzle Quest 2
Puzzle Quest 2, from Namco Bandai, is a puzzle game with more of a storyline than Bejeweled. You travel around helping people while hunting for the baddie. Match up coloured gems to arm yourself with weapons and battle with the enemies.
Uno is the classic card game, brought to Windows Phone 7 for your gaming pleasure. You can either play against AI or pass your phone around to play multiplayer against your friends.
Asphalt 5 is a fast-paced racing game already available on Symbian through the Ovi Store and the iPhone. There are loads of cars to choose from and a number of game modes including drift, cop chase and time trial.
In Glyder 2, you’ll have to guide Eryn and her glider on a quest to unlock new lands. You’ll have to show off your skills as you power dive, dolphin, and harness thermals to soar high into the sky.
Star Wars: Battle for Hoth
Star Wars: Battle for Hoth is similar to the iPhone tower defence version of the game, where you will have to guide Darth Vader’s forces to protect against the rebel force and destroy Echo Base’s main power generator.
You play a jet pack-toting character who has to crash through walls and anything else that might get in your way to defeat the evil, legless pirate Blackbeard who has escaped from prison.
Implode XXL is a casual game that has you blowing up structures with dynamite across a number of themed zomes. There are more than 150 levels built in with the opportunity to add more.
