Apple’s annual autumn event kicked off showcasing a TON of new hardware including the Apple TV 4K, the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus, and the brand new iPhone X. But the company also introduced a new version of its wearable: the Apple Watch Series 3. While the general look of the device hasn’t changed much, Apple did add quite a bit of new features under the hood. But what’s the biggest feature? Cellular connectivity, of course.

Introducing the Series 3 Watch, Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, said, “We believe the addition of cellular will transform the way people use Apple Watch, providing a new sense of freedom since they can stay connected with or without their iPhone. Apple Watch Series 3 combined with the power of watchOS 4 is the ultimate device for a healthy life.”

Apple Watch Series 3: Cellular Connectivity

The biggest feature of the Apple Watch Series 3 is it now comes in two models. The first only has a GPS chip, but the second has the GPS chip and cellular connectivity. This means that Apple Watch Series 3 can be used for online activities when not paired with an iPhone. And yes, you’ll be able to make phone calls from the Series 3. It’ll use the same phone number as your iPhone, so you won’t require an additional line. How does that work? Well, the Apple Watch Series 3 features a new built-in e-SIM which is over 100 times smaller than traditional SIMs.

Apple Watch Series 3: The S3 and W2 Chips

The Apple Watch Series 3 also features a brand new processor: the S3. Apple says the new chip has a faster dual-core processor, which “allows for quicker app launch times and smoother graphics, and, for the first time, enables Siri to speak using the built-in speaker.”

The Series 3 also features a new W2 chip that is used for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It makes Wi-Fi connections 85% faster and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 50% more power efficient.

The Series 3 is swim proof, meaning it’s water resistant up to 50 meters.
