Sony Ericsson has beefed up its over-the-air downloads service PlayNow by signing up 10 record companies to add an extra 5 million songs to the catalogue.

The move brings in music from international and regional labels including Sony BMG, Warner Music Group and EMI.

Sony Ericsson also revealed a big expansion into mobile phone games downloads – 250 more games have been added from publishers such as EA Games, THQ, Glu and I-Play.

As part of the restructure of PlayNow, the company is rolling out the PlayNow arena – an international games and music portal aimed squarely at rivals such as Nokia’s Ovi and Apple’s iTunes.

Sony Ericsson said that it would exploit its unique applications such as TrackID – the excellent song recognition software – and the brand heritage of the Walkman range to ensure that its mobile offering had the edge over rivals.

The mobile phone maker said the rebranded services would be rolled out throughout 2008 and be available across 30 markets by the end of the year.
