Apple will be launching one or more iPad products on October 22, according to reports.
The company hasn’t said anything official yet, of course, but AllThingsD and The Loop have received information from “people familiar with Apple’s plans” suggesting that a big iPad event will be taking place on that date.
There’s no word on precisely what we’ll see at this event. Apple is rumoured to be preparing both the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2, but whether we will see both launching on October 22 or a more staggered launch schedule is anybody’s guess at this point.
While the general consensus from the rumour mill is that Apple’s iPad 5 is on schedule for a launch this year, there’s some uncertainty about the iPad Mini 2. Some sources believe it will feature a high-resolution Retina display and could arrive in tandem with, or shortly after, the iPad 5. However, there have been persistent rumours about Apple experiencing supply issues in its Asian manufacturing network, and there’s some suggestion it could be delayed until 2014. Further complicating the issue is another persistent rumour that we could see an iPad Mini 2 launch in 2013 without the Retina display, followed by an updated model in 2014 with the Retina screen tech.
The iPad Mini 2 isn’t expected to have changed much in exterior design apart from the possible addition of the Retina screen and the iPhone 5S’s Touch ID fingerprint scanner Home key, complete with Sapphire Glass. It could also see new colour variants in line with the iPhone 5S. It’s believed we will see the implementation of Apple’s 64-bit A7 chipset and improved camera tech.
The iPad 5, meanwhile, is thought to be a more significant overhaul taking many of its design cues from the iPad Mini. It’ll supposedly be thinner and lighter, with a narrower bezel. Again, a Touch ID Home button is rumoured for inclusion, as is the new A7 chip and an updated iSight camera.
It’s worth pointing out that the October 22 date conflicts with two other launches, Microsoft’s Surface 2 will be hitting retail and Nokia is hosting its “Innovation Reinvented” event which is expected to see the launch of the Nokia Lumia 1520 and Nokia Lumia 2520, as well as other possible announcements.
