Vodafone has confirmed it is delaying the April 1 launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. Early reports suggest the delay has been caused by ‘freight issues.’
O2, last week, also confirmed that it to would be delaying the release of the highly anticipated “PlayStation Phone.”
Nevertheless, this hasn’t perturbed Sony from instigating a massive advertising campaign in today’s Metro – although no explicit date was mentioned.
News of the delay comes via Pocket-Lint who reported the following:
“We can confirm that the Xperia Play handsets are still planned to launch in the UK for 1st April, as originally communicated. However, as of today, we have experienced a freight issue that may impact the number of Xperia Plays arriving at some retail outlets. This said, consumers can purchase Xperia Play as of April 1st at a number of stores across the UK.”
So ‘some devices’ will be launching on April 1 but not all and as you can see above, Vodafone hasn’t divulged any specific figures.
Nonetheless, emails sent out by Vodafone to customers that pre-ordered the handset are slightly more telling of the situation.
For instance, one such email said the following: “Sony Ericsson have [sic] advised us that they will not be able to supply the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play to meet the original launch date of 1 April. Unfortunately, this means there will be a small delay to your order.”
It added: “We are working closely with Sony Ericsson to ensure your phone is delivered as soon as possible and we will be in touch again with specific timescales when we know more.”
But that’s not all. Pocket-Lint has also uncovered that Orange too has fallen prey to this shipping error and won’t have any Sony Ericsson Xperia Play handsets either for its launch.
So what’s the actual delay? According to reports, it’s not that bad – days, rather than weeks.
Update: We’ve just seen, via Recombu, that Three has now confirmed that it too will be delaying the launch of the Xperia Play.
So, to recap: at present Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy are your best bet for securing an Xperia Play handset tomorrow – Vodafone, Three, O2 and, reportedly, Orange are now all no-goes.
