Rupert Murdoch’s iPad-only newspaper, The Daily, is reported to be getting a UK release in the summer.
The news comes via The FT, who reports that Jonathan Miller, chief digital officer for the group, said that The Daily would be available on the UK within the first half of this year.
At present, The Daily is only available in the US and Canada but all this is set to change in the very near future as News Corp begins its expansion of the brand.
Here’s what the FT reported:
“Mr Miller said The Daily was reaching “hundreds of thousands” of readers in the US at present and the timing of its launch in western Europe was partly dependent on Apple, the manufacturer of the iPad device, reaching agreement with publishers on its new subscription rules.”
There are also murmurs about uncertainty in the News Corp top brass about Apple taking 30 per cent of The Daily’s revenue via its new iOS subscription package.
The Daily, Stateside, costs 99c a week (£0.61p) or $39.99 a year.
Whether or not these prices will stay the same when News Corp launches The Daily in the UK remains to be seen. Having said that, in all honesty we can’t see News Corp ranking up the subscription prices in Europe – what with all this free news about!
