The New iPad Pro Has USB Type-C And No Home Button

Apple has revealed the all-new iPad Pro range at its special keynote event in New York, and it certainly comes packed with surprises. It’s more powerful and has a bigger screen – but it loses some things, too.

Powered by the new A12X Bionic chip with an 8-core CPU and 7-core GPU, these faster models will come in two screen sizes: 11-inch and 12.9-inch. The most obvious physical change is that there’s no Home button, so the screens are larger, despite the new iPads being roughly the same size as last year’s editions. It’s not an OLED panel, but instead uses the ‘Liquid Retina’ LCD display seen in the iPhone XR. It comes with Apple’s much-hyped ProMotion technology, too.

The removal of the Home button requires these new models to use FaceID – just like the iPhone – which means that Apple is slowly but surely removing TouchID from all of its products. It’s only a matter of time before Macbooks and iMacs adopt this tech, we’d imagine.

The other big news is that the iPad Pro loses Apple’s proprietary ‘Lightning’ connection in favour of the industry standard USB Type-C connection. This is a positive step forward – especially if you already have USB Type-C devices around the house, like an Android phone or the Nintendo Switch – but because Apple is still using Lightning on its 2018 iPhones, it creates something of a headache for those who own but like having a single connector for everything.

It also creates a secondary issue, because Apple has ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack for this new iPad. If you want to use wired headphones, you’ll need a USB Type-C to 3.5mm dongle – and as you might imagine, Apple doesn’t include one in the box. Say you’ve also got a shiny new iPhone XS, too – bad luck, as you’re going to need to use a Lightning to 3.5mm dongle with that, too. Hopefully, Apple will use USB Type-C on its 2019 iPhones to make this whole cable transition a little bit easier to stomach.

Elsewhere, the new iPad Pros possess four speakers that deliver wider stereo sound, which is good news. There’s also a 12-megapixel camera which is able to capable 4K video at 60fps. Battery life is around 10 hours. In terms of accessories, there’s a new smart keyboard and a redesigned Apple Pencil which can be charged by attaching it to the iPad Pro magnetically.
The new iPad Pro starts at $799 for the 11-inch model, with the price rising to $999 for the 12.9-inch version. It ships on November 7th.
