We’ve had the Prada phone, the Levis phone and the Porsche phone. Now get ready for the latest tie-in mobile from that bastion of sturdy style – JCB.
The JCB Toughphone is exactly what it says on the box. Its hardened rubber case wears the famous yellow JCB livery and is claimed to be operational from -20°C up to 60°C, although whether you can get a signal in a) Antarctica or b) the Atacama desert is another matter.
It does, however, come with a three-year guarantee, and JCB consumer products director Matthew Conrad believes the Toughphone fills a gap in the market.
"It’s reaching out to an area of people who want simplicity and durability," he said.
"Anyone who listens to The Archers on Radio 4 will know that one of the farmers lost his phone in the mud this week. When he found it, the Sim card was fine, but the phone was broken. If only he had a JCB Toughphone!"
Under the tough casing, the Toughphone boasts Bluetooth, Push-To-Talk and tri-band connectivity. The device also has built-in dual speakers so that your ringtone – can we crassly suggest ‘Bob the Builder’ or that awful ‘JCB Song’ from last year? – can be heard in noisy environments.
The JCB Toughphone will be available later this month from Phones4U, Speedy Hire and Plumb Centres. Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but as our source in the building industry tells us "[sharp intake of breath] it’s gonna cost you…"
