Nintendo Switch vs Nintendo Switch Lite – What’s The Difference?

More choice is better, the saying goes, but it doesn’t necessarily make things easier. That’s never been truer in the handheld gaming world now that Nintendo offers two versions of its insanely popular Switch.

There’s now the regular Nintendo Switch and the new Nintendo Switch Lite. So, just how do the two compare? Let’s dive in…

Design

  • Nintendo Switch – The handheld gaming device features detachable Joy-Con controllers, and can be used in handheld or tabletop mode–or be docked with a TV.
  • Nintendo Switch Lite – The Nintendo Switch Lite, however, can only be used in handheld mode. It does not offer detachable controllers and is not dock-compatible.

Winner? Nintendo Switch – It offers more versatility thanks to its docking capabilities and detachable Joy-Cons.

Display

  • Nintendo Switch – The Nintendo Switch sports a 6.2-inch touchscreen.
  • Nintendo Switch Lite – The Nintendo Switch Lite sports a 5.5-inch touchscreen.

Winner? Nintendo Switch – A bigger screen is better, baby.

Games

  • Nintendo Switch – The Nintendo Switch supports the entire library of Nintendo Switch titles, no matter what modes the gameplay offers.
  • Nintendo Switch Lite – The Nintendo Switch Lite only supports Switch games that offer handheld mode. It does not work with Switch games that require TV or tabletop modes.

Winner? Nintendo Switch – No matter what Switch game you buy, it’ll work best on the Switch

Battery

  • Nintendo Switch – The Nintendo Switch has two different battery life possibilities, depending on which model you own. Those possibilities are 2.5 to 6.5 hours or 4.5 to 9 hours (depending on model).
  • Nintendo Switch Lite – The Nintendo Switch Lite will get you 3 to 7 hours of gameplay.

Winner? Draw – It depends on which of the regular Nintendo Switch you have. The Lite has longer battery life than the first model Switch, but the second model regular Switch candidly beats the Lite.

Verdict?

In almost every area, the Nintendo Switch beats the Nintendo Switch Lite. The Switch is just a much better choice given its support for three modes of gameplay, detachable Joy-Cons, and a bigger display.

However, if you’re looking for a cheaper option the Nintendo Switch Lite is nothing to sneeze at. At $100 less (via Amazon), it’s great for affordable Nintendo gameplay.
