What to Look for In a Cell Phone Plan

When choosing a cell phone plan, the first step is to identify your needs:

    Best Phone Plans 2022

    • How many people will be using the plan?
    • Do you need unlimited talk and text?
    • What about Unlimited data?
    • How much data do you need?

Once you know your needs, you can start to compare plans. The best cell phone plans offer an affordable price for the amount of data and features you need.

For instance, if you’re looking for a family plan, you’ll save money by getting all your lines with the same carrier. Most of the larger carriers have excellent deals in place for family plans with four or more lines.

But if you’re after a single line, the price you’ll pay will vary massively depending on whether you go with one of the main carriers, Verizon or T-Mobile, for instance, or a smaller (and cheaper) MVNO like VISIBLE or Mint Mobile.

    Types of Cell Phone Plans

    Types of Cell Phone Plans

There are four main types of cell phone plans: individual plans, family plans, corporate plans, and prepaid plans.

Individual plans are best for people who only use their phone for personal use, while family plans are better for people who have multiple family members who all use cell phones.

Corporate plans are best for businesses that need to provide cell phones for their employees, and prepaid plans are best for people who want to pay for their cell phone service in advance.

    Cheap Cell Phone Plans

When it comes to cheap cell phone plans, you have a lot of options – mostly with MVNO carriers. You can get a great plan with unlimited talk and text for just $15 per month.

Or, you can get a plan with unlimited talk, text, and data for just $30 a month.

But all you get with these types of plans are calls, texts, and data – there are no extra goodies (things like free subscriptions, cloud storage, and priority network data).

    Unlimited Cell Phone Plans

The Best Unlimited Data Plans (1)

Most carriers, both the main type and MVNOs, offer unlimited data plans. You can pay anywhere from $40-$40 per month right up to $90 per month for unlimited data plans.

The difference, again, is that the cheaper plans are available via MVNO networks like Mint Mobile and VISIBLE which is fine but these MVNO networks DO NOT come with things like priority network data or any additional extras.

PROS & CONS of Unlimited Data Plans

    • The biggest pro of having an unlimited cell phone plan is that you never have to worry about going over your minutes or data. You can use your phone as much as you want, without having to worry about the bill.
    • The biggest con of having an unlimited cell phone plan is that it can be very expensive. If you don’t use your phone that much, then you’re basically paying for a lot of minutes and data that you’re not even using.

You also need to remember that most carriers do data throttling and data deprioritization. If you’re on an MVNO network or a cheaper unlimited plan from a big box carrier like Verizon or T-Mobile, you’re going to experience both of these things more.

More expensive plans like Verizon’s 5G Get More, for instance, come with unlimited data and unlimited priority network access which means your data speeds, regardless of network congestion, will always be as fast as possible.

Cheaper unlimited plans, both from MVNO networks and on Verizon’s network, do not offer this feature.

This is one of the MAIN differences between an expensive unlimited plan and a cheaper one. You pay quite a lot more for a premium unlimited data plan but it will come with a host of benefits you simply do not get on cheaper plans.

What kind of benefits? Stuff like:

    • Unlimited 5G Ultra Wideband Data
    • Unlimited Premium Network Access
    • 50GB Mobile Hotspot Data
    • 600GB Cloud Storage
    • Free HULU, Disney, ESPN
    • Free Apple Music / Arcade

The above benefits are examples of what you get with Verizon’s flagship unlimited data plan, 5G Get More.

Which Plan Should You Go With?

Best Unlimited Data Plans For 1 Line

These are our top picks for the best unlimited plans (as of right now, so late 2022). Just don’t go thinking this is an arbitrary list – quite a bit of planning (and debate) went into selecting just five unlimited plans.

We choose these plans because they A) offer unlimited data, B) offer additional extras, things like free access to HULU and ESPN, as well as free hardware like AirPods, and C) because they all have excellent coverage and very impressive 5G and 4G speeds.

Now, let’s dig into the nitty gritty, the plan you should go with based on your current wants and needs…

    Go With Verizon’s Plan If…

Go with Verizon’s Unlimited Plans if you want to avoid data throttling and data deprioritization; its 5G Get More offers truly unlimited data with no trolling up to 100GB p/m and it comes with unlimited premium network access, so you never experience data deprioritization even in built-up and congested areas.

Verizon’s unlimited plans, notably its 5G Get More, come with the most extras of any plan on the market right now as well.

Go with this plan and you’ll get 50GB of mobile hotspot data, one travel pass per day per month, 600GB of Verizon Cloud Storage, and 50% discounts for Verizon Home Internet services, as well as free access to the following services and streaming apps:

    • HULU
    • Disney+
    • ESPN
    • Apple Arcade or Google Play Pass
    • Apple Music

    Go With VISIBLE’s Plan If…

VISIBLE is an MVNO that offers very low cost unlimited data plans. You’ll pay $40 a month for unlimited data from VISIBLE, and its network is powered by Verizon’s network. That means rapid 5G and LTE speeds and great coverage.

You don’t get all the bells and whistles that you get with Verizon’s unlimited plans – stuff like premium network access and loads of free streaming applications – but it does cost around 50% less. If you’re price sensitive and you can live with “extra goodies” then VISIBLE is a great option.

Go With Mint Mobile’s Plan If…

Mint Mobile’s unlimited data plan starts from $30 a month, making the cheapest plan overall. Mint is powered by T-Mobile too, so you’re getting access to one of the fastest, most reliable networks in America with brilliant 5G and LTE speeds and coverage.

Again, you don’t get any extras with Mint Mobile but its unlimited data plan prices are one of the cheapest you’ll find on the market.
