Final Fantasy VI will launch on Android and iOS later this year, according to reports. And it won’t be a port either. No, Final Fantasy IV for iOS and Android will apparently be a complete remake of the 1994 classic designed specially for smartphones.
Square Enix director and producer Takashi Tokita confirmed the news to Kotaku. “It is basically like a remake of the original VI. But there have been some enhancements.”
He added: “The battle systems have been altered for the other [mobile remakes] for Final Fantasy and VI will be the same. For instance grinding was an issue and people had to spend a lot of time leveling up. Now on the mobile devices the battle systems have been adjusted so you don’t have to fight as much and can enjoy the game for what it is.”
Tokita confirmed the graphics, which will remain 2D, have also been refined for smartphone usage, just as they were for Final Fantasy V. There’s no word on pricing and availability or which platform it will come to first, although Tokita did confirm it would arrive this winter.
Last time we checked it was pretty wintery outside, and that can only mean one thing: Final Fantasy VI will be landing very, very, soon…
