Changing themes on the Sony Ericsson W980

It's easy to refresh the look and feel of your Sony Ericsson W980 simply by changing its theme. In just a few button clicks you can customise the way your W980's menus look, and transform its wallpaper and screensavers to your own tastes.

The themes function on the Sony Ericsson W980 allows you to change the menu appearance, wallpaper, and screensaver all in one go. Most themes include all of these elements, so it takes just seconds to alter the whole feel of the phone.

Some themes available for the W980 also add haptic feedback to the menu system - giving a slight vibrating buzz when scrolling through the menu options.

The W980 comes with its Walkman theme pre-set, although you can change this to another of Sony Ericsson's pre-loaded themes. In addition, you can download new themes directly from Sony Ericsson's Fun & Downloads online portal using an option in the Themes menu; some are free and others have to be paid for. You may also be able to download paid for themes from your mobile network operaor.

Alternatively, there are huge numbers of themes you can find and download online - many of which are free. The scope for what you can get is astonishing - pretty much anything you're after, from favourite bands or football clubs to celebrities or movies, and much more, can be discovered.

Whether you order them over the air straight to your W980 or download them to a PC before copying them over to your phone, installing new themes follows the same easy procedure described below:

To select or change a theme:

• From the standby page select Menu (Figure 1)
• In the main Menu press Options (Figure 2).
• Scroll down to highlight Theme. Press Select (Figure 3)
• Scroll down to the theme you want to use and press Set (Figure 4).

Alternatively, on the Themes menu page, select the Sony Ericsson option at the top of the list to access a selection of new themes you can download from Sony Ericsson's Fun & Downloads portal. This will involve going online so be prepared for additional data charges if you are not on an unlimited data plan.

Once you've selected your Theme, it will take a few seconds to be set (Figure 5), but then your menus, wallpaper and display colour scheme will all change. You can press Back to view your newly applied theme (Figure 6).

Press the End key to get back straight to your new-look standby screen (Figure 7).

You can easily swap the Theme back to the original, or any of the others, simply by following the same procedure described above.
