'Update not available' fix for W880i RSS reader

How to fix the 'Update not available' problem that occurs in the Sony Ericsson W880i RSS reader

The Sony Ericsson W880i has a fantastic built-in RSS reader but occasionally it doesn't work - it just gives off a cryptic 'Update not available' error message when you try to update a feed.

This occurs even when you have access to the web or other online services such as email or the built-in TrackID music recognition software.

The good news is that there are a couple of simple fixes for this infuriating issue. The first is simply to delete the pre-programmed RSS feeds that came with the W880i.

We've found that many of them point to out-of-date addresses on the Sony Ericsson portal - yes it's an old fashioned human error.

Fix one - new feed with correct address

To add a new feed do the following:

In the main menu screen click on Messaging
Click on RSS reader
Click on More and then New feed. Enter the correct address to the new RSS feed and click on Go to. The feed information will be downloaded to the W880i Reader reader
When the RSS feeds are listed again the new feed should be on the list. Click on it, then select More and Update now. The feed should update itself and then sport a green tick alongside it

Fix 2 - change the RSS reader connection settings

If that doesn't do the trick then you may have to change something in the RSS reader settings.

In the main menu screen click on Messaging
Click on RSS reader
Click on More and then click on Settings
In the Settings screen make sure that under 'Allow connection' the Any Network option is the one selected (if it is Home Network switch it to Any Network')
Go back to the main RSS reader screen and try to update a feed. You should find that it works OK now
