Browsing the internet with your W850i
Rhys Lewis
Use your W850i to browse and bookmark ordinary websites while you're on the move
The Sony Ericsson W850i comes equipped with 3G/GPRS/EDGE connectivity and a WAP browser that gives you full access to the internet. It performs very similar actions to an ordinary PC-based web browser, but simplifies the operation to suit the limitations of a mobile phone.
To access the W850i’s WAP browser, press the centre button to enter the main menu and scroll up to highlight the Internet globe icon and press Select (Figure 1). You can also open the WAP browser using the Internet key on the front of the phone – it’s the bottom left-hand button which also features a globe icon.
Once you’ve entered the browser your phone will automatically connect to the internet (Figure 2). The main screen will show your homepage; to navigate to another page, press the right-hand More key once the page has loaded. Highlight Go to: and press Right on the navigation keys (Figure 3). A menu will appear from the right hand side that will show the name of your homepage at the top, then Bookmarks, Enter address and History below. To enter a website address, highlight Enter address and press Select (Figure 4).
If this your first time in the browser you’ll only have the option of New address, but as you continue to use the browser, each address you enter will build up below, which makes it a lot easier to navigate to a familiar website. Highlight New address and press Select, then enter the website address (pressing the 1 key once for a dot and three times for a forward slash) and press Go to.
There are two ways to bookmark a favourite web address. You can either navigate straight there by entering the address (Figure 5), then all you need to do is press More, scroll down to Go to and press Right, then highlight Bookmarks then press Select. To create a new bookmark, simply highlight New bookmark and press Add (Figure 6).
If you want to enter details from scratch, you can clear the information in here and enter your own settings, but if you have already navigated to the page, the web address and title will automatically have been added from the website. To store the bookmark, press Save (Figure 7).
Even though the Enter address and History menu each store your recently viewed files, bookmarking can be very useful because the Activity menu stores all your bookmarks for faster access. When your phone is in standby, press the Activity menu button (the bottom right button with two little squares on it), now press Right to scroll to the Internet tab (Figure 8). Highlight bookmarks and press Select. Here you’ll find all your bookmarked websites. Highlight one and press Go to to automatically launch the WAP browser and navigate straight to the page.
Changing your homepage can be a little more complicated. Enter the main menu, highlight Settings and press Select (Figure 9). Now scroll right until you reach the Connectivity tab, then scroll down until you highlight Internet settings and press Select (Figure 10). Press Select again to enter your internet profiles. By default this will highlight the Internet profile you’re already using, so press More and select Advanced (Figure 11). Press Select to Change homepage (Figure 12) and enter a Name and Address for your preferred home page by highlighting the existing setting, pressing Edit and pressing OK when you’re done (Figure 13). To save the changes, press Save.
Tip: to save money on mobile data fees, change your browser settings to prevent it from downloading images. Enter your browser and press More. Highlight Options and press Select (Figure 14), then highlight Show pictures and press Select (Figure 15). Change this to ‘Off’ and press Select (Figure 16). Then press Back to go back to your browser screen.
