Change the navigation key shortcuts on the W810i
Alistair Warmington
Why settle for what your network provider wants you to use as shortcuts when you can simply set up your own?
The W810i’s menu/media navigation buttons can be customised with shortcuts of your choice. This gives you up to four functions that you can access quickly using a single button press.
Your network provider will probably have decided what goes in here, so it’s likely that at least one will point to a WAP service of some sort and by default are set up as Contacts (down), Create New (left), Calendar (right).
To change the change these functions, enter the Menu, either by pressing the centre button or by pressing the Activity Menu button and selecting Main Menu. Move down and right to highlight the Settings icon and press Select (Figure 1). Scroll straight down to highlight Shortcuts/Favourites and press Select (Figure 2). Here you’ll see a list of the four customisable buttons called Navig. Key up, right, down and left respectively, along with a short description of which action they currently perform (Figure 3).
Choose whichever key you want change then press Edit . The phone will then appear to have reverted to the main menu, but there should be a new background image and the option to press Shortcut on the right hand selection key (Figure 4). Now all you need to is navigate through the menu to the function that you require and press Shortcut. So if you want to set the up navigation key to set an Alarm, you highlight the Organizer icon and press Select (Figure 5). Then scroll to Alarms and press Shortcut (Figure 6). This will save your selection and return you straight to the Shortcuts section in the Settings (Figure 7). Press the Back key to return to the main menu.
If you want to add more even more quick functions, you can also add them to the My shortcuts section of Activity Menu. To do so, press the Activity Menu button (opposite the Walkman button) and scroll down until you reach My Favourites (Figure 8), then click Expand then scroll down until you highlight New shortcut (Figure 9). Press Add and you will find yourself in the main menu. Once again, all you need to do is navigate the menu until you find the function you’re looking for and press Shortcut (Figure 10). You will then return to the Activity menu.
By default the Activity menu can be quite full, so if you want to delete some items from it, all you need to do is press the Activity Menu, scroll down to My Favourites (Figure 11), button, select the shortcut you want to get rid of, press More (Figure 12) and then Delete (Figure 13). You can also use this to rearrange the order of items in the Activity menu.
