A selection of sample digital photos to show the quality of the Sony Ericsson W810i's 2-megapixel camera

The Sony Ericsson W810i's built-in camera boasts a top resolution of 1632x1224, equivalent to 2 megapixels, along with two lower settings of 640x480 and 160x120 - the last well suited to sending as MMS messages.

The camera has a macro mode, a panorama mode that lets you stitch three images into one long panorama and a burst mode for action shots that takes four photos in rapid succession, allowing you to choose the best.

You can alter the white balance of the camera according to the conditions, and if an image doesn't come out as well as you'd hoped, you can call on the W810i's on-board editing tools to tweak the photo without downloading it to a PC first.

At the W810i's top resolution of 1632x1224 (2 megapixels), the image is crisp and sharp, but bright colours tend to fade
The W810i takes decent images indoors, although even at 2 megapixels, bad pixellation among darker areas mean they're not good enough to print
The W810i's LED 'flash' certainly brightens up the scene, but the light is clearly reflected by the subject, and again dark areas are subject to pixellation

The 4x digital zoom blows up the centre of the image and adds extra pixels to maintain the same resolution. This leaves edges jagged and washes out colours further, and you'd get better results using image editing software
Colours tend to wash out on larger images and contrast is poor where the rooftops meet the sky due to the overcast conditions, but for an auto setting this image is more than passable
