The W710i puts a gym in your pocket! Whether you're running or walking, the phone will measure your steps and time your sessions

One of the unique features of the W710i is the fitness suite. This is based around a pedometer, or step counter.

For an accurate reading, the phone needs to be attached quite firmly to you so that it gets jarred as you walk– ideally either on your belt or using the supplied strap to fasten it to your arm - keeping it in a pocket or bag isn’t as accurate. The pedometer only starts counting after eight paces, which helps prevents accidental counts.

To access the pedometer, from the main menu select Fitness (the stopwatch icon) and click Select (see figure 1)

Highlight Settings, click Select and from here, you can turn the pedometer (Step count) on and off, set your personal data (height, weight and age – which is used to estimate your calorie burn) and calibrate the unit by highlighting Adv. calibration, clicking Select and walking a known distance as advised.

Under Results, you can see the basic data of how many steps you've taken each day. Opening the Advanced menu here launches a Java application which will produce graphs of your training sessions.

Running is the most advanced application. To start it, go to Fitness, highlight Running and click Select (see figure 2)

Click Setup to tell the phone how long a lap is (either by distance or time), use Auto stop session to tell the phone to stop a session after a certain number of laps, and set both upper and lower speed limits to monitor your pace - the phone will beep if you are outside these limits.

When you've chosen your settings, press Start and close the phone, and the countdown to start will begin with three prominent beeps. The soft grey keys on the outside of the phone can be toggled between controlling the music player and the running application by pressing the button on the bottom right of the display.

In Running mode, the start/stop button on the outer shell of the phone pauses the training session, the fast forward button signals a new lap,and the rewind button flips the display between different information views.

All of your exercise data is stored in a spreadsheet in the phone’s Sports folder; you can copy this to your PC using file transfer mode.
