Get the latest news straight to your W710i using RSS
Matthew Haigh
Why search the internet for the latest news when the W710i's RSS reader brings the headlines to you?
The built-in RSS reader on the W710i lets you download the latest news headlines directly from a wide range of internet content providers without having to visit graphics-heavy homepages that can use up your monthly data allowance.
The RSS reader is in the Messaging area of the W710i’s main menu. To access it, from standby mode click Menu, highlight Messaging and click Select (Figure 1). Highlight RSS reader and click Select (Figure 2). Any news feeds set up by your network provider will be visible here (Figure 3).
Adding RSS feeds
To add your own feed, first find the URL on the internet. The simple nature of RSS feeds mean that PC and mobile browsers use the same URL, so if you find a feed you like on the internet, make a note of the URL and add it to your mobile feeds.
From the RSS reader’s main page, click More, highlight New feed and click Select (Figure 4). Enter the full URL of the feed using the keypad and click Go to (Figure 5). The message ‘Locating feed’ will appear as the RSS reader downloads the feed for the first time (Figure 6), until the message ‘Added to RSS reader’ appears.
Click on the feed’s name to view the latest headlines. You’ll notice a little sign to the right of each headline. To read a brief summary of an article, highlight the headline and click Select. To read the full article, scroll down to highlight the globe icon at the bottom of the summary box and click Select. This will open the W710i’s web browser and take you to the full page online – note that some RSS feeds will not link directly to mobile versions of the pages.
Updating RSS feeds
To update a set of headlines, highlight a feed in the RSS reader, click More, highlight Update now and click Select (Figure 7). In a short while the feed will be updated.
You can also schedule updates to bring you the latest headlines. Highlight a feed in the RSS reader, click More, highlight Schedule update and click Select (Figure 8). Take your choice of updating every hour, once or twice a day or never and click Select (Figure 9).
