Set up GPRS Internet on the W710i

Matthew Haigh

Get online with your W710i whilst by following some very simple steps

To be able to browse the internet from your W710i, you’ll need to set up a data account first. This tells the phone how to make the connection to the net, which you’ll probably want to do through GPRS for speed and cost effectiveness (but do check how much your provider will be charging – this could be flat rate, or as much as £10 per megabyte).

Go to the main menu, select Settings (Figure 1), go to the Connectivity tab, then scroll down to Data comm (Figure 2). The first step here is to set the preferred service option to be both GPRS and GSM (Figure 3), after which you should go to the Data Accounts option (Figure 4).

If you don’t have an account set up, or you simply want to add a new one, then choose Add New (Figure 5). On the Account Type page, choose GRPS data (Figure 6). Next you’ll be prompted for an Account name (Figure 7), choose anything you like – though I’d recommend naming after the network that you are setting it up for (e.g. O2 WAP).

You can now configure your account by filling in the correct APN, User ID and Password for your network (Figure 8).

Finally, go back to the Settings, Connectivity tab, choose Internet Settings (Figure 9) and go to Internet profiles (Figure 10). Add a New profile (Figure 11), with whatever name you like (e.g. O2 profile). Change the Connect Using option to be the internet account you set up earlier (e.g. O2 WAP) and save the profile.

Back on the profiles page, scroll down to the profile you’ve just set up and select it (Figure 12). This makes it the default profile for web browsing and internet access.
